All-Terrain Crane Rental in Abilene, TX
An all-terrain crane is the big telescopic crane that still drives public roads under its own power, and around Abilene the right one is chosen by three things: the load chart at your radius, the counterweight the lift needs and how that weight reaches the site, and the airspace over the job. Crews shorten the name to AT. The load chart is the builder's printed limit for every combination of boom length and radius, radius being the flat distance between the crane's turning axis and the hanging load. Tadano gives both of its AT examples here a 52.8 mph maximum travel speed. Lifts in this range belong to projects like the Stargate data center campus in northwest Abilene, the B-21 program at Dyess and the wind repower in western Taylor County.
$500 to $1,500 an hour for a large crane, national figure (crane cost guide from a nationwide rental marketplace, April 27, 2026) · full pricing guide
An AT pairs a long telescopic boom with a carrier that runs the highway and then stands on outriggers, the beams and jacks that raise it off its tires, so one machine reaches well past a truck crane's chart on a heavy pick, the trade's word for a single lift. Tadano's AC 5.250-2 specifications list 300 USt, a 44.0 ft to 229.6 ft main boom, a 378.2 ft maximum tip height, five axles and up to 176,400 lbs (80 t) of counterweight. Mid-class, Grove rates its GMK5150L-1 at 175 USt with a 197 ft six-section boom and a 318.2 ft tip height. Around Abilene that range suits heavy mechanical equipment, long reaches over a roof, precast and steel, and plant work where the boom must clear what already stands; lighter picks belong on the truck crane page.
Big-crane prices we found are national and wide; use them to test a quote. In its crane pricing article of April 27, 2026, a national equipment-rental marketplace lists large cranes at "$500 to $1,500 per hour", the 200-ton class at "$500 to $1,000 per hour" or "$2,500 to $12,000 per day", and the 500-ton class at "$1,685 per hour"; its large-crane row reads "$400 to $1,200+/hour" bare, meaning the crane alone, and "$750 to $1,200+/hour" operated, with the operator included. ThePricer.org, updated November 12, 2025, adds "escort trucks for counterweights" to the bill without a dollar figure. On tax, the Comptroller's Rule 3.294 presumes one crane-and-operator charge to be a service, and inside the City of Abilene the state and local rates combine to 8.25 percent. Every class sits side by side on the cost page.
Four rule sets frame an AT lift here. OSHA's section 1926.1427 has the employer evaluate each operator on the crane's size and configuration, which OSHA says "includes, but is not limited to, lifting capacity, boom length, attachments, luffing jib" and counterweight set-up. Section 1926.1402 reads "The equipment must not be assembled or used unless ground conditions are firm, drained, and graded" so that "the equipment manufacturer's specifications for adequate support and degree of level of the equipment are met", and the controlling entity, OSHA's name for the prime or general contractor running the project, must see to it. The FAA wants notice for anything "more than 200 ft. AGL at its site". And TxDMV's yearly crane permit, at $100, caps width at 10 feet and gross weight at 120,000 pounds.
Wind, ground and logistics pace an AT day in Abilene. Liebherr says crane lifting capacity tables "generally apply in gust speeds of up to 9 m / s (20 mph)", and OSHA's section 1926.1417 has the competent person, whom OSHA describes as "one who is capable of identifying existing and predictable hazards in the surroundings or working conditions", adjust the work for wind. Abilene blows past that every year: NOAA's annual summaries for the airport show a peak gust of at least 53.9 mph in every year from 2010 to 2024, and a measuring site near Abilene Christian University caught 76 mph on July 5, 2026, per NWS San Angelo. On the ground, the USDA NRCS lists Hollister, a shrink-swell clay, beside the Abilene series, so floats go on mats. Plan the haul road and a laydown spot for counterweight trucks early.
Quoting an AT takes more from you than a truck crane does: the heaviest load and its rigging, where it is lifted and where it lands, the soil, the route in, room for outriggers and counterweight trucks, any lines overhead, the address and the dates. The quote is free, comes in writing before work begins, and shows each charge on its own, from crane class and size, operated or bare, minimum hours and travel to counterweight trucks, escort cars, permits, mats, rigging and tax. If the site lies within the airspace of the Abilene airport or Dyess, we check the job against 14 CFR 77.9 and the City's airport rules and say whether a Form 7460-1 must reach the FAA at least 45 days ahead.

Five Example AT Cranes and Their Published Ratings
Five all-terrain cranes as their builders publish them, from a 55 USt model to a 300 USt one. Read across for capacity, boom, tip height, axles and road speed, then let the load chart for your radius, boom and counterweight make the final call.
| Example model | Max capacity | Main boom | Max tip height | Axles / drive code | Top travel speed |
|---|---|---|---|---|---|
| Grove GMK3050-3 | 55 USt | 131 ft, 5 sections | 167 ft | not listed / 6x4x6 | not listed |
| Tadano AC 4.080-1 | 88 US tons | 35.8 - 196.9 ft | 255.9 ft | 4 / 8 x 4 x 8 | 52.8 mph (tire and law dependent) |
| Grove GMK5150L-1 | 175 USt | 197 ft, 6 sections | 318.2 ft | not listed / 10x6x10 | not listed |
| Link-Belt 225|AT | 225 USt @ 8 ft | 44.9 ft - 202.2 ft (spec table: 46 - 202 ft) | 334 ft (spec table figure) | not listed | 55 miles per hour |
| Tadano AC 5.250-2 | 300 USt | 44.0 ft - 229.6 ft | 378.2 ft | 5 / 10 x 6 x 10 | 52.8 mph (tire and law dependent) |
Every value is the builder's own published maximum or listed figure. Tadano footnotes its road speeds as depending on tire type, size and country-specific rules, and Link-Belt's page prints 334 ft in its spec table but 330 ft in its feature list. Capacity on site comes from the chart for the rigged configuration. These are sample models of the class, not cranes we own.
Signs Your Abilene Lift Has Outgrown a Truck Crane
An AT enters the plan when a truck crane's chart runs out before the job does. These are the site facts that point to it on an Abilene project, and each brings its own check on ground, airspace, road permits or wind.
- At the working radius, the load with its hook block and rigging weighs more than any truck crane chart in reach allows.
- The boom tip would stand higher than 200 ft above ground level, the first FAA height trigger in 14 CFR 77.9.
- The pick needs more counterweight than rides on the crane, so trucks, a laydown area and escorts join the plan.
- Outriggers would land on clay that held water after a storm, so mats and OSHA's ground check come first.
- The job lies under the airspace of Abilene Regional or the Dyess runway, where the City's airport zoning applies as well.
Stargate, Dyess B-21 and Buffalo Gap: The Big Lifts Near Abilene
Three programs drive the largest lifts here, each told in its owner's words. On Oracle's Abilene data center page, which Oracle marks current as of January 2026, "The campus consists of eight buildings on 1,100 acres, encompassing 4 million square feet of building space", with GE Vernova natural gas turbines for backup power; OpenAI named it "the flagship Stargate campus" on September 23, 2025. Crusoe said on March 27, 2026 that the second phase, six buildings taking the campus to 1.2 GW, is expected to be complete by the end of 2026, and that its separate 900 MW campus for Microsoft next door has two buildings of 336 MW each, the first due to be energized in mid-2027.
At Dyess, the 7th Bomb Wing, reporting the December 15, 2025 groundbreaking of a $26.7 million fuels facility, said it is one of more than 24 projects in a $1.6 billion modernization effort, and a Small Business Administration notice describes "an approximately 47,000 SF single story Mission Planning Facility for B-21 operations" on a "drilled pier foundation, steel frame". In Taylor and Nolan counties, AES's Buffalo Gap Repower page lists 117 newer turbines replacing 282 older ones and 526.5 MW planned, operating in 2027; KTAB reported on January 8, 2026, quoting AES, a 120 m hub height, above the 115 m tip height Tadano lists for the largest AT in the table. Work at this scale needs lift plans, mats, FAA checks and counterweight logistics; the project data page keeps each figure with its source.
Moving an AT Crane and Its Counterweight on Texas Roads
An AT's road trip starts with weight and width. TxDMV's annual permit for unladen lift equipment, set at $100 by Transportation Code section 623.182, has limits that read "Width - 10'", "120,000 pounds gross weight", "25,000 pounds single axle" and "46,000 pounds tandem axle group". Grove lists its GMK5150L-1 at 132,280 lbs, above that gross figure. For heavier moves TxDMV issues a single-trip, mileage-based permit with a $31 minimum fee: "Single-trip mileage permits are valid for a maximum of seven consecutive days", no single axle may exceed 30,000 pounds, and "An oil well related vehicle or unladen lift equipment motor vehicle exceeding 175,000 pounds gross weight must have front and rear escorts when crossing bridges." Wide loads add escorts by TxDMV's table: past 14 feet up to 16 feet, "1 Front - two-lane highway" or "1 Rear - multi-lane highway"; past 16 feet, front and rear on all roads.
The TxDMV rule at 43 TAC section 219.11 adds "A permitted vehicle may be moved only during the daytime unless:" one of its exceptions applies, and TxDMV's holiday page says "Vehicles and loads exceeding 14 feet wide, 16 feet high, or 110 feet long may not be moved" on the holidays it lists. In town, the Abilene MPO's 2050 plan rings the city with IH 20, SL 322 and US 83 to keep truck through-traffic off arterials. The heavy haul page covers trailers and permits.
Tall Booms Near Abilene Regional Airport and Dyess Air Force Base
A tall AT boom near either airfield can need FAA notice before the first pick. Under the FAA notice rule at 14 CFR 77.9, notice is due for construction or alteration "more than 200 ft. AGL at its site", or above a surface sloping "100 to 1 for a horizontal distance of 20,000 ft. from the nearest point of the nearest runway" at an airport "with its longest runway more than 3,200 ft." The FAA's Part 77 page lists "Cranes, Boom Trucks" among temporary construction, 14 CFR 77.7 sets the Form 7460-1 deadline at 45 days before construction begins, while the FAA's own advice is 45-60 days.
A Determination of No Hazard can carry "Limitations necessary to minimize potential problems" and "Marking and lighting recommendations, as appropriate." The FAA diagram for Abilene Regional prints two parallel runways, 7198 and 7208 ft long, and a field elevation of 1791; a "2758 FT MSL TOWER" shapes the Runway 17L departure. The City's airport zoning requires an Airport Zone Development Permit inside and outside city limits, at no separate fee, and has structures of 150 feet or more obtain an FAA Determination of No Hazard. Dyess's Runway 16/34 measures 13,500 feet long by 300 feet wide, and its AICUZ study calls it "important to initiate coordination with the FAA and Dyess AFB." Zoning maps and permit steps are in the permit and airspace guide.
AT, Truck Crane or Crawler, and Operated or Bare
Two decisions settle most large lifts around Abilene: which class carries the heaviest pick at its radius for as long as the job runs, and whether the crane comes with an operator. Each option names the figure or rule behind it and the work it suits.
Truck crane, if the chart allows
When a truck crane's chart covers the heaviest pick, it is the lighter move. Link-Belt's HTC-8675 Series II travels under 95,000 lbs with 14,400 lbs of counterweight installed, and Grove lists 65 mph as the TMS800-2's top travel speed. It suits rooftop sets, single beams and short equipment moves where one vehicle brings the whole crane.
All-terrain for heavy reach
When the chart needs more, the AT examples climb from 55 USt to 300 USt, and Link-Belt gives its 225|AT a top speed of 55 miles per hour. Tadano lists up to 176,400 lbs of counterweight for the AC 5.250-2, more than the 120,000-pound gross weight TxDMV's annual crane permit allows for a whole vehicle. It suits heavy mechanical sets, long reaches and tall steel at one address.
Crawler for long, heavy programs
A crawler crane arrives in loads and is assembled on site under OSHA sections 1926.1403 and 1926.1404, with an assembly/disassembly director in charge; Manitowoc lists its MLC165-1 at 182 USt with a top ground speed of 1.9 mph. It beats an AT when the heavy picks run for weeks at one site, as on a multi-building campus, so the assembly is spread over many lifts.
Operated or bare AT
The same April 27, 2026 marketplace guide says many rental companies require operated-and-maintained rentals on higher-capacity lifts. On an operated AT, the operator who comes with it must meet OSHA section 1926.1427 for that crane's size and configuration; on a bare rental the duty falls on your company, and we need your operator's name before quoting. Rule 3.294 makes a rental without an operator taxable.
All-Terrain Crane Rental FAQs
What does an all-terrain crane cost to rent near Abilene?
No source we can cite prices this class in Abilene, so national guides are the measure. A nationwide rental marketplace's crane cost article, dated April 27, 2026, lists the 200-ton class at "$2,500 to $12,000 per day" and the 500-ton class at "$6,000 to $13,300+ per day". Escort cars, counterweight hauling, permits and mats add to it. Our written quote lists each charge and any tax, and the quote is free.
All-terrain crane or truck crane: which one does my lift need?
The load chart at your radius decides, and the AT class reaches further. The truck crane examples on this site top out at 120 USt and a 262 ft tip height (Link-Belt's 120|HT), while the AT examples reach 300 USt and 378.2 ft (Tadano's AC 5.250-2). Road speeds differ as well: Grove lists 65 mph for its TMS800-2 truck crane, and Tadano lists 52.8 mph for both of its ATs.
Does a tall crane near Abilene Regional or Dyess need FAA approval?
It may need FAA notice first. Under 14 CFR 77.9, notice covers anything more than 200 ft above ground at its site or above the imaginary surfaces that slope away from a runway, and 14 CFR 77.7 makes Form 7460-1 due at least 45 days before work starts. The City's airport zoning applies near Abilene Regional, and the Air Force urges early coordination near Dyess. We check both before your date.
Can a crane lift in high wind in Abilene?
Only inside the wind limits of its chart and manual. Liebherr says crane operation "must be halted" once the current wind speed passes the permissible speed in the load chart, and OSHA's section 1926.1417 has the competent person adjust equipment or operations for wind. We track the forecast; if the operator or competent person rules the weather unsafe for the lift, the hook stops, and the quote spells out how standby is billed.
Do you bring all-terrain cranes to Sweetwater and Merkel?
Yes, we quote AT work in the towns around Abilene. In Nolan County, whose seat is Sweetwater, the Texas Comptroller's 2023 wind table lists the Sweetwater Wind Farm at 585 MW. Outside town, IREN announced on May 1, 2026 the energization of its Sweetwater 1 data center site; see crane rental in Sweetwater. Merkel sits in northwestern Taylor County, and NextEra's Horse Hollow Wind Energy Center spans Taylor and Nolan counties; see crane work around Merkel. Site owners set access rules.
