Crawler Crane Rental in Abilene, TX

A crawler crane rides on tracks, arrives by truck in loads and is assembled where it will work, and in Abilene the decision rests on three things: the heaviest pick at its radius, what the ground can bear under the tracks, and how high the boom climbs near two airfields. A pick is one lift of one load. A load chart sets the rated load for each boom length and radius, and Manitowoc measures radius as the "horizontal distance from axis of rotation to center of gravity of the freely suspended load." Lattice-boom crawlers carry what OSHA calls a "cable suspended latticed boom"; telescopic crawlers carry a hydraulic boom that slides out in stages. Rent one operated, with an operator on hourly billing and a minimum, or bare, with an operator you provide; our written quote costs nothing.

Published price

$300 to $1,500 per hour, with larger units over $2,000 per day, says a national equipment-rental marketplace's April 27, 2026 guide · full pricing guide

A crawler earns its trucking and assembly on heavy, repeated lifts over a long schedule. Tracks let it move around a pad, slowly: Manitowoc's MLC165-1 product guide gives a "Maximum ground speed of 1.9 mph", the MLC300 guide gives ".8 mph", and Tadano lists 0.5 mph low and 1.4 mph high for the GTC-1300. Pick-and-carry, moving with the load hanging, is the maker's call: 29 CFR 1926.1417(u) says "Traveling with a load is prohibited if the practice is prohibited by the manufacturer," and where it is allowed a competent person, someone able to spot hazards and authorized to correct them, supervises it. Around Abilene the projects with that profile include data-center campuses and the B-21 program at Dyess, which 7th Bomb Wing Public Affairs, reporting the December 15, 2025 fuels-facility groundbreaking, put at "more than 24 infrastructure projects" in "a $1.6 billion modernization effort".

Published crawler prices we found are national, and wide. A crane cost guide that a nationwide equipment-rental marketplace posted on April 27, 2026 says "Crawler crane rentals can vary from $300 to $1,500/hour, or upwards of $2,000 per day for larger units", and its capacity table gives $2,500 to $12,000 a day at 200 tons against $6,000 to $13,300 or more at 500 tons. No guide we cite prices the trucking or assembly of a crawler; they name the charges, such as "Road permits and other fees" and, in ThePricer.org's guide updated November 12, 2025, "escort trucks for counterweights", the removable weights that keep a crane stable. The first guide says setup time is billed, "doing test picks" included, and ThePricer counts "standby or wait time when the site is not ready" as a cost. Texas tax follows the Comptroller's Rule 3.294, set out in the first FAQ below.

Four rule sets govern a crawler job here. OSHA section 1926.1402 wants ground "firm, drained, and graded" enough, with mats, the panels that spread a crane's weight, where needed, for the crane to sit as level and as well supported as its maker specifies, and it makes the site's controlling entity, usually the general contractor, responsible. OSHA section 1926.1427 requires every operator to be "trained, certified/licensed, and evaluated", with certification by "equipment type, or type and capacity". Near AEP Texas lines, section 1926.1408 opens with the 20-foot question, and the Texas Health and Safety Code, in section 752.004, forbids bringing equipment "within six feet of a high voltage overhead line" without the guarding that section 752.003 lays out. On the road, Link-Belt lists the 138 HSL's main transport load at 89,923 lb with tracks, over the 80,000-pound legal gross the Texas Department of Motor Vehicles sets, so permits ride with the trucks.

Abilene's clay and wind shape a crawler job. One Manitowoc crawler chart assumes "The crane must be leveled to within 1% on a firm supporting surface," and the shrink-swell clays the USDA describes around the city move with their moisture, so plan mats under the tracks on a new pad. Bloomberg's May 2025 feature on the Stargate site described trucks that "plod over red clay, weaving in between cranes and excavators." Longer booms get lower wind limits: one Manitowoc crawler capacity document allows "14 m/s thru 61.0m Boom" and "10 m/s from 64.0 m thru 91.4m Boom", read "at boom point elevation", and NWS San Angelo's July 2026 summary gives a 76 mph gust near Abilene Christian University on July 5. Before the trucks arrive, grade and drain the pad, clear the boom laydown area and leave room for the counterweight trucks and any helper crane.

To price a crawler we need the heaviest pick and its radius, the height to clear, the number of picks and weeks, the pad's soil and any soil report, the truck route, room to assemble, overhead lines, the site address and your dates. The quote shows the crawler class and size, operated or bare, the rental period or minimum, transport, assembly, mats, permits, escorts and rigging, each priced on its own with any tax. Before a lift we check AEP Texas line clearances under OSHA and the Texas 6-foot law, and near Abilene Regional or Dyess we weigh the boom's reach in the air against 14 CFR 77.9 and the City of Abilene's airport rules, then tell you if a Form 7460-1, due at least 45 days ahead, is needed. A lift plan for the heavy picks is on our rigging and lift planning page, and the Abilene crane and equipment cost page lists prices by class.

Crawler Crane Specs: Lattice and Telescopic Examples

Three lattice-boom and two telescopic crawlers, rated from 80 to 386 US tons, with each maker's own figures. A jib is the extension fitted at the boom tip, a luffing jib one that can be raised and lowered on its own, and the upperworks is the revolving top of the crane. The last column gives the numbers that decide trucking and assembly on an Abilene pad.

Example model Max capacity Boom length Tip height or jib Transport, counterweight, travel
Link-Belt 138 HSL (lattice) 80 US tons at 12 ft 40 to 200 ft tube boom 242 ft tip with fixed jib 89,923 lb main load with tracks
Manitowoc MLC165-1 (lattice) 182 US tons (165 t) 275' maximum 226 ft boom + 80 ft fixed jib 1.9 mph; 168,500 lb counterweight
Manitowoc MLC300 (lattice) 386 US tons (350 t) 334.6 ft maximum 315 ft luffing jib .8 mph; 474,400 lb upperworks counterweight
Link-Belt TCC-1200 (telescopic) 120 US tons at 10 ft 40 to 150 ft, five sections 211 ft tip height 89,000 lb main transport load
Tadano GTC-1300 (telescopic) 130 US tons 155', five stages 259 ft lift height on 105 ft jib 0.5 mph low, 1.4 mph high

These are each maker's published maximums, quoted from its spec page or product guide; Manitowoc and Tadano print some lengths with a foot mark. The capacity on your pick comes from the load chart for the boom, jib and counterweight rigged that day. The models stand for the class; we do not claim to own them.

Signs a Crawler Fits Your Abilene Project

A crawler pays its way when the work is heavy, repeated and long enough to cover the trucking in and the assembly. These conditions, most of them visible on the site plan, point to one on a project around Abilene.

  • The heaviest pick runs into the hundreds of tons, where Manitowoc rates the MLC165-1 at 182 US tons and the MLC300 at 386 US tons.
  • The crane will stay on one pad for weeks or months, setting steel, equipment or precast pieces one pick after another.
  • Loads must travel with the crane across the site, and the maker's procedures permit that for the configuration you need.
  • The pad has room to lay out and pin the boom, with truck access for the counterweight, boom and track loads.
  • The boom tip will climb past 200 feet above the ground, or the site sits under the airport surfaces of Abilene Regional or Dyess.
  • The ground is clay that turns soft after rain, and the crane's weight has to spread through tracks and mats rather than four outrigger pads.

Crawler Assembly Under OSHA Sections 1926.1403 and 1926.1404

OSHA sections 1926.1403 and 1926.1404 decide who runs a crawler's assembly on your site and what gets checked first. Section 1926.1403 requires the employer to obey "all applicable manufacturer prohibitions" and follow either "Manufacturer procedures applicable to assembly and disassembly, or" "Employer procedures for assembly and disassembly", the second only where the employer can show they meet section 1926.1406. Under 29 CFR 1926.1404(a)(1) the work is directed by "a person who meets the criteria for both a competent person and a qualified person, or by a competent person who is assisted by one or more qualified persons", the A/D director.

A qualified person, in OSHA's definition, has "a recognized degree, certificate, or professional standing" or has shown, through "extensive knowledge, training and experience", the ability "to solve/resolve problems relating to the subject matter, the work, or the project." The director "must review the applicable assembly/disassembly procedures immediately prior to the commencement" and work through twelve hazards the rule lists, from the ground and the blocking under the crane to counterweights, backward stability and "The effect of wind speed and weather on the equipment." 29 CFR 1926.1407 adds a power-line check for any part that could come "closer than 20 feet to a power line", and no assembly below a line unless it is deenergized and visibly grounded. The Link-Belt 138 HSL specifications show the scale: a 145,403 lb working weight against an 89,923 lb main transport load.

Data-Center Campuses Near Abilene, as Their Owners Describe Them

Data-center campuses around Abilene show the scale of work a crawler is built for, though none of their owners says which cranes they use. OpenAI calls the one on Lancium's land, in what the City describes as northwest Abilene, its "flagship Stargate campus" (September 23, 2025). Oracle's Abilene data center page, current as of January 2026, says it "consists of eight buildings on 1,100 acres, encompassing 4 million square feet of building space," and a March 27, 2026 Crusoe release says the second phase "is expected to reach completion by the end of 2026." Crusoe also announced a 900 MW campus next door for Microsoft, where "Each of the two new buildings is designed to deliver 336 MW of critical IT load", with land clearing underway and the first building "expected to be energized in mid-2027". In Shackelford County, Vantage said on August 19, 2025 that its Frontier campus "will be home to 10 data centers totaling 3.7 million square feet" on 1,200 acres, and a December 15, 2025 Data Center Dynamics report calls them "single-story".

Near Sweetwater, IREN said on May 1, 2026 that its 1.4GW Sweetwater 1 site was energized. Builds like these call for long crane bookings, mats, lift plans, airspace checks and heavy hauls; we describe them as their owners do, not as jobs of ours. Dated figures are on our Stargate and construction data page, and the Albany crane page and Sweetwater crane page cover those areas.

Boom Height Near ABI and Dyess: FAA Notice and City Airport Zoning

Near Abilene's two airfields a crawler's boom needs an FAA notice check: every crawler in our table can top 200 feet in its longest rigging. The FAA's notice rule, 14 CFR 77.9 requires notice for "Any construction or alteration that is more than 200 ft. AGL at its site", and, nearer an airport, for anything above a surface rising "100 to 1 for a horizontal distance of 20,000 ft. from the nearest point of the nearest runway" where the longest runway is "more than 3,200 ft." Both fields qualify: the FAA's October 2026 diagram prints Abilene Regional's runways as 7198 X 150 and 7208 X 150 feet, and the Air Force gives Dyess Runway 16/34 as 13,500 feet long by 300 feet wide.

The FAA lists "Cranes, Boom Trucks" among temporary construction. Section 77.7 requires Form 7460-1 "at least 45 days before the start date", and a Determination of No Hazard expires 18 months after it takes effect. The City's Airport Zone Development Permit brochure, updated in 2010, says "Structures greater than 150 feet in height or greater shall obtain a Determination of No Hazard" from the FAA, and near Dyess it exempts structures "less than 50 feet in height" in Accident Potential Zone I and "less than 150 feet in height in the APZ II and beyond". Before a lift near either field we work through these criteria, then say whether a Form 7460-1 must be filed and what the City asks; the permit and airspace guide has the full rules.

Lattice Crawler, Telescopic Crawler or All-Terrain Crane

Three classes cover most heavy lifting around Abilene. The choice turns on the capacity you need at your radius, how much assembly the site can take, and how often the crane has to move between picks or between jobs on the road.

Lattice-boom crawler

The longest reach and highest ratings in our table: Manitowoc lists a 334.6 ft maximum boom and 386 US tons for the MLC300, balanced by 474,400 lb of upperworks counterweight. Plan for many truckloads and an assembly directed under OSHA section 1926.1404. It suits months of heavy picks on one large pad.

Telescopic crawler

A hydraulic boom on tracks, with less to put together: Link-Belt's TCC-1200 telescopes from 40 to 150 ft and ships its main load at 89,000 lb, and Tadano rates the GTC-1300 at 130 US tons with "Gradeability (unladen): 70%". It suits plant yards and pads where the crane moves between picks on its tracks.

All-terrain crane

Highway travel and no track assembly: Link-Belt's FAQ gives the 225|AT a "top speed of 55 miles per hour", and Tadano lists 300 US tons for the AC 5.250-2. It suits a heavy pick on a short schedule, set on outriggers and mats, and our all-terrain crane page compares that class.

Questions

Crawler Crane Rental FAQs

How much is a crawler crane rental per day near Abilene?

An equipment-rental marketplace's national guide, dated April 27, 2026, puts larger crawlers at "upwards of $2,000 per day" and its 500-ton row at $6,000 to $13,300 or more a day, before transport, assembly and escorts, which the guides leave unpriced. Tax depends on the bill under the Comptroller's Rule 3.294: a bare crawler is a taxable rental; one charge covering crane and operator is presumed a service, untaxed unless the work is taxable; separate charges make the crane part taxable; damage waiver and delivery are taxable. Inside Abilene the combined rate is 8.25 percent.

How does a crawler get to a job site in Abilene?

By truck, in several loads, under Texas permits. Link-Belt lists main transport loads of 89,923 lb for the 138 HSL and 89,000 lb for the TCC-1200, while Texas's legal gross is 80,000 pounds. A Texas Department of Motor Vehicles general single-trip permit covers loads "up to 254,300 pounds" for $60 plus a highway maintenance fee, and a Superheavy permit should be sought "three to four weeks before the permit is needed". Our heavy haul and machinery moving page sets out escorts, holiday limits and routes.

Do I need a certified operator for a lattice boom crawler crane?

Yes. OSHA section 1926.1427 says "The employer must ensure that each operator is trained, certified/licensed, and evaluated," and certification is "based on equipment type, or type and capacity", so it has to match the machine. NCCCO, one accredited certifier, places lattice boom crawlers under its "Lattice Boom Cranes (LAT)" designation, and its handbook says "The certification period is for five years." Operated or bare, the rule follows whoever sits at the controls, so for a bare crawler we ask who your operator will be.

How much ground pressure does a crawler put on clay soil?

No single figure fits. Ground pressure, the weight bearing on each unit of ground under the tracks, changes with the crane, the counterweight and the load. One Manitowoc chart assumes the crane is "leveled to within 1% on a firm supporting surface". Liebherr's figure for sand, gravel and stone mixtures is "around 200 kN/m2", and Link-Belt builds "live ground bearing pressure alarms and readings" into its telescopic crawlers. On Abilene's shrink-swell clays we plan mats and ask for any soil report before we quote.
