Heavy Haul and Machinery Moving in Abilene, TX

A heavy haul is the move of a crane, a dozer, crawler sections or a plant machine too wide, tall or heavy for an ordinary load, and around Abilene three things decide it: the State of Texas's legal limits, the TxDMV permit a load needs once it passes them, and the ring of IH 20, Loop 322 and US 83 that local planners route trucks onto. Texas sets the no-permit marks at 80,000 pounds on the scale, 14 feet off the pavement and 8 feet 6 inches side to side, along with axle and length limits. Past them, the Texas Department of Motor Vehicles issues single-trip, superheavy and annual permits and sets escorts, flags, daylight hours and holiday bans. Inside a building the work becomes machinery moving, by carry deck crane or rigging.

Published price

Most Abilene equipment hauls average $2 to $4 per mile (a national freight marketplace's Abilene page, no date shown) · full pricing guide

Link-Belt lists the main transport load of its TCC-1200 telescopic crawler at 89,000 lbs and of its 138 HSL lattice crawler at 89,923 lbs with tracks, so either piece alone tops the 80,000-pound legal gross before the truck and trailer count, and Grove lists its GMK5150L-1 all-terrain crane at 132,280 lbs, beyond the 120,000-pound gross of TxDMV's annual crane permit. Cranes and heavy machines work the region's big sites: Bloomberg's May 2025 feature on the Stargate campus, which Oracle's Abilene page puts at eight buildings on 1,100 acres as of January 2026, described trucks "weaving in between cranes and excavators", and AES's project page says its Buffalo Gap repower swaps 282 older turbines for 117 newer models in Taylor and Nolan counties.

Hauling is priced by distance, size and permits. A national freight marketplace's Abilene heavy-equipment page (no date shown; 2026 copyright) says "most jobs average $2-$4 per mile." The same marketplace's national guide (updated 2023) adds that a 30,000-lb crane "might run $3,500 or more", that trailers built for oversized loads "could add $500 to $1,000", and that rates "often rise by 10-20% during peak construction seasons." State fees ride on top: a TxDMV general single-trip permit is $60 before any highway maintenance fee. None of these is our price; the Abilene cost guide for cranes and equipment sets them next to crane rates. When the haul delivers a rental, the Comptroller's Rule 3.294 is plain: "All transportation charges billed by the lessor to the lessee related to the leased property are taxable," at Abilene's combined 8.25 percent.

The State of Texas draws the line between a load and a permitted load. TxDMV's size and weight limits page sets the gross at 80,000 pounds, the axle groups at 20,000 pounds single, 34,000 tandem, 42,000 triple and 50,000 quad, the height at 14 feet and the width of a non-passenger vehicle at 8 feet 6 inches. A non-divisible load past any of them needs a permit. The general single-trip permit is good for "one movement" up to 254,300 pounds. A superheavy permit takes loads past 254,300 pounds or "between 200,001 pounds and 254,300 pounds with less than 95 feet of axle spacing", applied for "three to four weeks before the permit is needed". Our permit, airspace and power-line guide applies the same rules to cranes.

Inside Abilene, trucks follow a practice rather than an ordinance. The Abilene MPO's 2050 plan (approved December 17, 2024) describes IH 20 on the north, SL 322 on the east and southeast and US 83 on the west and southwest as controlled-access roads that "help keep truck through-traffic off arterials", "In lieu of a City of Abilene truck route ordinance," and names turning radii at major intersections and vertical clearance at grade separations as the limits trucks meet. The City of Abilene's semi-parking rules bar parking commercial vehicles rated over one ton on public streets outside the HC, LI and HI districts. Small towns differ: Merkel's code keeps vehicles with three or more axles over 12,000 pounds off city streets other than I-20, state routes and deliveries, as our Merkel crane page explains.

For a haul quote we need the machine's make and model, its loaded width, height, length and weight with attachments, the pickup and drop-off addresses, the dates, and what waits at each end: gate widths, low wires, the ground a trailer or crane will stand on, and any building door the machine must pass. You get the price in writing, with no fee for quoting, and the trailer or crane, the travel, each permit and escort and any rigging sit on separate lines with any tax shown. Where a crane sets the machine at the far end, we first check that site against the overhead-line rules and tell you which arrangements are ours and which are yours.

TxDMV Permits and Fees for Moving a Crane or Machine

These are the State of Texas permits a heavy move around Abilene draws on, with the fees TxDMV prints on its permit pages and in its fee table dated February 2021. The load's exact size and weight decide which one applies.

TxDMV permit When it applies Fee as published Term or limit
General single-trip Non-divisible load over legal size or weight $60 permit fee One movement; up to 254,300 lb
Highway maintenance fee Single-trip loads over 80,000 lb gross $150, $225, $300 or $375 by weight $35 supervision fee over 200,000 lb
Superheavy single-trip Over 254,300 lb, or 200,001+ lb under 95 ft spacing $60 + $375 + supervision fee Apply three to four weeks ahead
Annual unladen lift equipment Mobile cranes over legal width or weight $100 a year ($102.51 by card) 10 ft wide; 120,000 lb gross
Unladen lift equipment, mileage One crane trip over legal size or weight By miles, size and weight; $31 minimum Up to seven consecutive days
Quarterly hubometer Lift equipment billed by miles run Miles traveled or $31, whichever is greater 91 days, then close out or renew
Time permit, width or length Over legal width or length, for a set period $120, $180 or $240 30, 60 or 90 days (fee table, February 2021)

Fees are the State of Texas's published figures, from TxDMV's undated permit pages and its fee table dated February 2021; card payments add 25 cents per permit plus 2.25 percent. They are not our prices, and the permit a move needs depends on its exact dimensions and weight.

When a Move Around Abilene Becomes a Permitted Haul

A machine that fits a normal trailer rides a normal trailer. These conditions turn the job into a permitted move, a crane trip on its own permit or in-plant machinery moving, and each traces to a Texas rule or a local limit.

  • Loaded on the trailer, the machine measures more than 8 feet 6 inches side to side or rises above the 14-foot line Texas allows without a permit.
  • Truck, trailer and machine weigh more than 80,000 pounds together, or an axle group passes its legal weight.
  • A mobile crane must drive to the job wider or heavier than the legal limits, which calls for a TxDMV permit for unladen lift equipment.
  • The trip is planned for Thanksgiving, Christmas or New Year's Day and the load tops 14 feet in width, 16 feet in height or 110 feet in length.
  • The route runs under power lines where any part of the load could pass within six feet, which Texas Health and Safety Code chapter 752 bars without arrangements.
  • The machine has to go down a plant aisle or through a door no truck fits, which makes it a carry deck or rigging job.

Texas Escort, Flag and Axle Rules for an Oversize Load

Once a load is permitted, TxDMV's rules set how it travels. Permitted axle weights rise to 25,000 pounds on a single axle, 46,000 on a tandem, 60,000 on a tridem, 70,000 on a quadrem and 81,400 on a quint, are "based on 650 pounds per inch of tire width", may not pass the tire maker's rating, and need at least 40 inches between axles in a group. Escorts scale with size, and the escort table reads like this: width "Exceeding 14' to 16'" takes "1 Front - two-lane highway" or "1 Rear - multi-lane highway"; width "Exceeding 16'" takes "1 Front and 1 Rear - all roads"; height "Exceeding 17'" takes "1 Front - equipped with height pole"; height "Exceeding 18'" takes front and rear; and a load past the limits in two dimensions takes both. TxDMV may also order law enforcement escorts.

Overhanging loads are marked: a load wider than the truck, or more than four feet past its rear, carries "12-inch red flags marking the extremities of the load", and one that reaches past the bed by over four feet carries "two red lamps visible at a distance" of at least 500 feet from the rear. Loads over 20 feet wide or 18 feet 11 inches high need a Route Inspection Certification on file before the permit issues. The full tables are on TxDMV's escort and equipment page.

Cranes That Drive Themselves: TxDMV's Lift Equipment Permits

Texas Administrative Code Title 43, section 219.2(b)(65), covers "A motor vehicle, such as a crane or a concrete pump truck," built for lift work "used solely to raise, shift, or lower heavy weights". The annual permit comes from Transportation Code section 623.181, which allows one for a unit that "exceeds the maximum weight or width limitations prescribed by statute," and section 623.182 fixes its fee at $100. TxDMV's unladen lift equipment page runs it one year from the "movement to begin" date and lists "Width - 10'", "Height - Legal" and "Length - Legal", with "120,000 pounds gross weight", "25,000 pounds single axle", "46,000 pounds tandem axle group" and "650 pounds per inch of tire width". Cranes "9' wide or less, 14' high or less" and "65' long or less are allowed 24-hour movement".

Night travel, with escorts front and rear, opens to units no longer than 95 feet, no taller than 14 feet and no wider than 10 feet 6 inches. For a single trip, the mileage permit is priced "based on the number of miles permitted to travel and the size and weight of the vehicle and load", starts at $31, lasts up to seven consecutive days, caps any single axle at 30,000 pounds, and brings front and rear escorts across bridges above 175,000 pounds gross. Per OSHA's Cranes FAQ, 29 CFR 1910.180(b)(3) means the employee moving a crane "on and off the trailer must be qualified to operate the crane."

Abilene's Truck Loop and the Road Work a Heavy Load Meets

The I-20 corridor is slated for reconstruction. The Texas Department of Licensing and Regulation's filing for TxDOT's IH 20 project from FM 600 to SH 351 (CSJ 0006-06-109) lists "Reconstruction of main lanes and frontage roads", retaining walls, bridges and traffic signals, an estimated $125,517,728, and a start date of 11/3/2026 with completion 10/16/2029; the Abilene MPO's April 2025 improvement program prices the same CSJ at $136,385,894.97 to add two main lanes for a six-lane freeway, and TxDOT's June 2025 district profile lists "IH 20 including overpass at Judge Ely Blvd." at $120 million. On the west side, TxDOT's proposed six-lane widening, shown at a December 2024 public meeting, would run 5.32 miles from west of the city limits to 0.6 miles west of Catclaw Creek and reconfigure the US 277/US 83 interchange. TxDOT awarded $39.5 million on July 31, 2024 for a new interchange at US 83/277 and FM 3034, under construction since October 2024 toward an estimated spring 2027 finish, and the MPO lists Loop 322 and SH 36 intersection work for an estimated 05/2027 letting.

Farther out, TxDOT's Callahan County program lists replacement of the eastbound and westbound I-20 bridges over the Union Pacific at $9,414,000 each, let year 2028, in the county our Clyde crane page covers, and TxDMV's one Taylor County curfew, listed for Nolan and Taylor counties, closes SH 153 between US 277 and SH 70 to oversize and overweight loads from 8 a.m. to 8 p.m. on Sundays; Nolan County work is on our Sweetwater crane page.

Trailer, Permit, Own Wheels or Rigging: Choosing the Move

How a machine moves follows from its loaded size and weight against the Texas limits, and from where it has to end up, whether a yard, a jobsite or a spot inside a plant. The written quote names the method we plan, its permits and any escorts.

Legal-size haul, no permit

A load inside the Texas limits for gross weight (80,000 pounds), height (14 feet), width (8 feet 6 inches), axle groups and length moves with no TxDMV permit. Size and weight decide, not the machine's name, so we ask for the loaded dimensions. This suits compact machines and lifts.

Single-trip or superheavy permit

A non-divisible load past a legal limit moves on TxDMV's single-trip permit, which costs $60; a gross over 80,000 pounds adds a highway maintenance fee, and one over 200,000 adds a $35 supervision fee, for one movement of up to 254,300 pounds. Heavier loads go superheavy, with route and bridge analysis that TxDMV says needs three to four weeks. This suits dozers, crawler sections and large plant machines.

Crane on its own wheels

A mobile crane over the legal width or weight can travel all year on one $100 TxDMV permit for unladen lift equipment if it stays within that permit's limits, among them 120,000 pounds gross and 10 feet across; otherwise each trip goes on a mileage permit that starts at $31. ThePricer.org lists escort trucks for counterweights as their own cost. This suits all-terrain and truck cranes moving between jobs.

Machinery moving in place

Inside a plant, warehouse or building, the machine moves on a carry deck crane or with rigging and lift planning, off the public road; OSHA's crane standard covers carry-deck cranes as industrial cranes under 29 CFR 1926.1400(a). This suits plants such as those in the DCOA's Five Points Business Park along I-20.

Questions

Heavy Haul and Machinery Moving FAQs

Is a permit needed to truck a dozer or excavator in Texas?

Only if the loaded vehicle passes a legal limit. A dozer or excavator rides without a permit while the loaded truck stays at or below 80,000 pounds and the axle limits, under the 14-foot height line and within 8 feet 6 inches of width; past any one of those, a vehicle or load "must have an oversize/overweight (OS/OW) permit". TxDMV's TxPROS system lets most permits be self-issued. For a large dozer, a national rental marketplace's March 2026 cost guide puts delivery at $1,000-$2,000+ roundtrip, on a lowboy trailer with oversize load permits.

How much does it cost to haul heavy equipment around Abilene?

Most jobs average $2 to $4 per mile, according to a national freight marketplace's Abilene page (no date shown; 2026 copyright). Its national guide (updated 2023) puts a 500-mile-plus move at $1,000 to $2,000 and a mini excavator of 8,000 lbs at around $1,500. State permits add fees: $60 for a TxDMV single-trip permit plus $150 to $375 for loads over 80,000 pounds, or $100 a year for a crane's annual permit.

When can an oversize load move on Texas roads?

In daylight, as a rule: Texas Administrative Code, Title 43, section 219.11(l)(1)(A) says "A permitted vehicle may be moved only during the daytime unless" it is overweight only or it rides an interstate within set width and length limits, and Transportation Code section 541.401 defines daytime as "the period beginning one-half hour before sunrise and ending one-half hour after sunset." On TxDMV's restricted holidays, which include Thanksgiving, Christmas and New Year's Day, "Vehicles and loads exceeding 14 feet wide, 16 feet high, or 110 feet long may not be moved" without a TxDMV exception.

Can a tall load or a crane pass under power lines?

Only with clearance. Texas Health and Safety Code section 752.005 bars transporting equipment "within six feet of a high voltage overhead line" unless it is guarded under section 752.003, which starts with 48 hours of notice to the line operator and an agreed fix. For a crane traveling with no load, 29 CFR 1926.1411 sets clearances by voltage, a lowered boom and, if it "will get closer than 20 feet to the power line", a dedicated spotter. AEP Texas tells contractors to stay "at least 10 feet from anything energized."
