Crane Rental in Merkel, TX

We supply cranes and heavy equipment for jobs in Merkel, and here the first question on any crane rental is which street the truck will use. The Handbook of Texas places Merkel "off Interstate Highway 20 seventeen miles west of Abilene in northwestern Taylor County," and the Merkel Economic Development Corporation calls it "15 minutes west of Abilene on Interstate 20!" Inside the city limits, the City's code closes most streets to vehicles that have three or more axles and a rating over 12,000 pounds, so a Merkel lift is planned from the address outward: the nearest state route, then the ground, the wires and the trains.

Merkel had a population of 2,471 in 2020 and 2,457 in 2021, per the Texas Almanac table on its Handbook entry. The Handbook says agriculture "continues to play a significant role" in the town's economy and that residents also rely on oil-production jobs and military-support jobs at Dyess Air Force Base. That economy points to ranch and farm lifts, oil-lease ground, shop and storefront picks, building extensions and new utility lines. Each job gets a written quote before work starts, and the quote is free; published national price ranges sit on our cost page for cranes and equipment.

Merkel's Truck Rule, Rail Crossings and Taylor County Ground

The City of Merkel's heavy-vehicle rule shapes every crane and lowboy trip into town. Section 11.03.001 of the City of Merkel Code says vehicles "having three (3) or more axles and rated to be in excess of 12,000 pounds gross weight" "are prohibited from parking, use of and travel on streets within the city limits." Section 11.03.002 opens three ways in: Interstate 20 with its access roads; the state routes it names, FM 126 North (Kent Street), FM 126 South (Ash Street), FM 1235 South (parts of Cherry, South 2nd and Oak Streets) and the IH 20 business loop (North 1st), plus any other state-maintained road; and deliveries whose driver carries a log book, delivery slip or other evidence. Even on the state routes, these vehicles may not park in residential areas.

Trains are the second thing a heavy load meets. The Handbook says Merkel grew up "when the Texas and Pacific Railway arrived," and its Taylor County entry says "The Missouri Pacific Railroad serves cities such as Merkel, Tye, and Abilene." The Abilene MPO's 2050 Metropolitan Transportation Plan adds the line that matters to a slow load: "Merkel has four at-grade crossings that can all be blocked simultaneously by typical trains." A lowboy bound for a site across the tracks can be held at any of them, so build slack into the arrival time.

Taylor County's ground is the third. The Handbook describes "loamy surface soils" that "are reddish to brownish, while the clayey subsoils often include lime accumulations," across 917 square miles in the Rolling Plains vegetation region, with altitudes from 1,672 to 2,410 feet above sea level and the hills of the Callahan Divide crossing the county. Clay that softens after rain is what outrigger pads, haul roads and tires meet. We found no Merkel soil survey, so OSHA's section 1926.1402 carries weight: the controlling entity, defined in section 1926.1401 as the employer "which has the overall responsibility for the construction of the project," must tell the operator of hazards beneath the set-up that site drawings or soil analyses identify.

New building around Merkel comes from sources the public record names. The City's economic development page says "Raw land, existing buildings and build to suit opportunities abound," and its ordinance list shows a new tax increment reinvestment zone and the annexation of a portion of FM 126. Merkel ISD, which lists 1,100+ enrolled students on 3 campuses, voted on August 13, 2025 to hold a November 4, 2025 bond election for a new middle school; we did not find the result. NextEra's Horse Hollow fact sheet puts its turbines in Taylor and Nolan counties, and Nolan County's seat has its own Sweetwater crane rental page.

Overhead lines near a Merkel job may belong to Taylor Electric Cooperative or another utility. A Texas House resolution adopted April 26, 2019 says Merkel community leaders formed the cooperative in 1939 and that it serves residents in eight counties, Taylor and Jones among them; its home page lists its headquarters in Merkel. Under section 752.003 of the Texas Health and Safety Code, work closer to a high-voltage line than chapter 752 allows needs notice to the line's operator "at least 48 hours before the work begins." Ahead of the lift, we measure the set-up against that statute and OSHA's clearance distances, then say what needs arranging and who arranges it.

Cranes for Merkel Lifts, From Truck Cranes to Heavy Hauls

Each crane class below can come with an operator, billed hourly with a minimum charge, or as a bare rental, the machine alone. An operated crane's operator meets OSHA's section 1926.1427, which requires each operator to be "trained, certified/licensed, and evaluated"; on a bare rental that section binds your operator, and we ask who it will be. To price a Merkel lift we need the load's weight, how far out and how high it moves, what the crane will stand on, the wires nearby, and the address and dates.

Truck Cranes for Merkel Shops, Storefronts and Ranch Lifts

A hydraulic truck crane, a telescopic boom on its own road-going carrier, is the usual answer for a single lift in Merkel, as long as its route and set-up fit the City's heavy-vehicle code. A crane of this class is plainly inside that code: Grove's TMS800-2, one example, lists an "8 x 4 x 4" drive and a total gross vehicle weight of 74,448 lbs. A pick beside Kent Street, Ash Street or North 1st can be reached on a state route the code opens. A set-up on a residential side street is not on that list, and the code bars these vehicles from parking on state routes in residential areas, so ask City Hall, which handles the City's permits, how it treats a crane there before the date is set. The truck crane rental page covers load charts, outriggers and billing.

All-Terrain Cranes for Merkel's Heavier and Taller Lifts

An all-terrain crane is the step up when a Merkel lift is too heavy or too high for a truck crane yet too short a job to justify assembling a crawler. Its axles and weight put it in the City's heavy-vehicle class too: Tadano lists "4" axles for its AC 4.080-1 and "5" for its AC 5.250-2, so the crane and the trucks hauling its counterweight keep to Interstate 20, its access roads and the state routes. Wind sites are where lifts of this size appear in the county: NextEra's fact sheet gives Horse Hollow's three phases as 213, 299 and 223.5 megawatts, built from GE turbines of 1.5 megawatts and Siemens turbines of 2.3 megawatts. Lifts on a private wind site are planned with its owner. Past 200 feet above the ground, a boom needs FAA notice under 14 CFR 77.9(a) whether or not an airport is near. Permits and road speeds are on the all-terrain crane page.

Rough-Terrain Cranes on Merkel Ranch, Farm and Lease Ground

A rough-terrain crane fits a Merkel job off the pavement: a pasture, a farm yard, a gravel lease road or a lot with no street to the pick. It rides big tires with four-wheel drive and travels slowly, so it reaches Merkel on a trailer, and that truck keeps to Interstate 20 and the state routes. On site, OSHA's section 1926.1402 forbids using the crane until the ground is "firm, drained, and graded" so that, with mats or blocking if needed, "the equipment manufacturer's specifications for adequate support and degree of level of the equipment are met." The controlling entity provides that preparation; with none, the duty falls on the employer that "has authority at the site to make or arrange for ground preparations." On a ranch job with no general contractor, settle who that is before the date. RT models and day ranges are on the RT crane page.

Crawler Cranes for Long Merkel-Area Projects

A crawler crane suits a Merkel-area job only when the picks are heavy and the stay is long, because its boom and body travel as a string of truckloads to be assembled where it will work, a process OSHA governs in sections 1926.1403 and 1926.1404. Nothing in our Merkel sources is that size inside town. In the county, wind sites carry lifts of that size: AES says its Buffalo Gap repower, which spans Taylor and Nolan counties, replaces 282 older turbines with 117 newer models, and KTAB, quoting AES on January 8, 2026, put the new hub height at 120 m and the new turbines about 200 feet taller than the existing ones; KTXS reported on June 11, 2026 that foundation work was underway. A crawler job near Merkel turns on room to assemble the boom, firm ground under the tracks and a haul plan that keeps every truck on the open routes. The crawler crane page has classes and ranges.

Boom Trucks for Merkel Roof Units, Signs and Gin Work

A boom truck, a truck chassis carrying its own telescoping crane, is often the right size for Merkel's everyday lifts: a rooftop unit, a sign or light pole, trusses for a building extension, or machinery for a cotton gin. The City's history page says Merkel, once a town of many gins, "now has only one gin, the Farmers Co-Op Gin." The axle rule still governs the route. Boom truck makers call for heavy chassis, such as the 60,000 lb gross vehicle weight rating National Crane gives for its 1400H, far past the code's 12,000-pound mark, so the truck's axle count decides whether it must stay on the state routes. Truck ratings, CDL rules and job prices are on the boom truck page.

Carry Deck Cranes Inside Merkel Shops and Plant Buildings

A carry deck crane works where a truck crane cannot set up: inside a shop or plant building, down an aisle or in a fenced yard, lifting on its outriggers, driving with the load on its hook or carrying material on its deck. Merkel's public record names few floors of that kind; the town's one remaining gin and the "existing buildings" the City's economic development page markets are the candidates it shows. A carry deck is not a road crane, so it arrives on a trailer whose route follows the axle rule. What decides the job is the door width, what the floor will bear and whether the load rides on the deck or hangs from the hook, since each has its own rating. The carry deck crane page shows how they differ.

Lift Plans for Merkel School, Rail-Side and Windy-Day Picks

A written lift plan is worth having on any Merkel pick near students, trains or gusty air. KTAB reported on October 6, 2025 that Merkel ISD's proposed middle school would share the high school's cafeteria, athletic and band spaces, so lifts would happen beside an occupied campus; OSHA's section 1926.1424 requires lines, railings or similar barriers marking the crane's swing hazard area, and 29 CFR 1926.1425 bars workers from the fall zone below a load except those hooking, unhooking, guiding or receiving it. Beside the tracks, the plan sets pick and travel times around trains. The air is the third variable: on June 21, 2023, NOAA's Abilene station logged a 74.0 mph gust, a day NWS San Angelo lists for widespread wind damage in the Big Country; more records are on our Abilene projects and weather page. Plan contents and roles are on the rigging and lift planning page.

Heavy Hauls Into Merkel on I-20, State Routes and Crossings

A heavy haul into Merkel is a route problem before it is a trailer problem. The City's code lets heavy vehicles, three axles or more and rated above 12,000 pounds, use Interstate 20 with its access roads and the state routes it names, and lets a delivery onto other streets only when "the driver has in his possession a log book," "delivery slip, or some other evidence to justify the presence of that vehicle"; that clause was last amended by an ordinance adopted 1/27/2026. Section 11.01.001 bans engine braking, meaning to "brake or slow the motor vehicle through the use of gears." FM 1235, one of the open routes, runs from Merkel southeastward via View to FM 89 at Buffalo Gap under TxDOT's highway designation, and any of the town's four at-grade crossings can hold a load for a train. Texas size limits, TxDMV permits and escorts are on the heavy haul page.

Excavators, Loaders and Lifts for Merkel Jobs

Equipment for a Merkel job rents by the day, week or month and comes on a trailer, so the axle rule touches the delivery first. Texas811 says "Texas law requires excavators to contact 811 at least two business days before excavating," and calls getting lines marked "a FREE service." The maker's operating manual travels with each machine. Forklift, telehandler and aerial lift operators need the training that OSHA and the ANSI/SAIA standards call for, and we ask that yours have it.

Excavators for Merkel Footings, Water Lines and Building Lots

An excavator handles Merkel's footings, utility trenches and lot work, from a mini excavator for a service line to a full-size machine for a building pad on the raw land the City markets. Texas 811 needs its two business days of notice before the first bucket of dirt comes out. The City's Public Works page says its director oversees water, wastewater and streets but shows no street-cut rule, so a cut in a city street is a question for City Hall before you dig. In the trench, OSHA's Subpart P requires a protective system at 5 feet deep or more unless the cut is in stable rock, wants spoil kept "at least 2 feet (.61 m)" from the edge, and has a competent person inspect daily and "after every rainstorm." Taylor County's clayey subsoils, with the lime the Handbook mentions, are what that inspection looks at. Sizes and dig depths are on the excavator rental page.

Skid Steers and Track Loaders for Merkel Lots and Pastures

A skid steer on wheels suits Merkel's paved lots, driveways and cleanup; a compact track loader suits the same work once rain has softened the clay, because tracks spread the machine's weight. Farm and ranch ground is much of the work around a town built on agriculture. Texas Utilities Code section 251.156 lists exemptions, among them "activities performed on private property in connection with agricultural operations"; for anything else, Texas 811 gets its notice first, and the marking is free. On construction work, OSHA's section 1926.1000 rollover rule reaches "rubber-tired skid-steer equipment, with or without attachments," "manufactured after July 15, 2019, that are used in construction work." The skid steer and track loader page sets wheels against tracks, with ratings.

Telehandlers for Merkel Building Extensions and Farm Buildings

A telehandler places pallets, block, trusses and roofing on a Merkel building job without a crane, as long as the load fits its chart at the height and reach needed. Merkel's building chapter requires a permit before "new builds or extensions of buildings" and adopts the 2021 International Building Code, so inside the city limits the projects that bring a telehandler, such as a shop addition or a new commercial building, are permitted ones. OSHA's Powered Industrial Trucks eTool puts telescoping-boom forklifts in Class VII, calling them the "Variable reach type," so 29 CFR 1910.178(l) has each operator trained, then evaluated at least once every three years. A machine built as both a crane and a forklift falls under the crane standard, OSHA's June 21, 2012 letter says, "when configured, and operated as, a crane." Reach charts are on the telehandler page.

Boom Lifts for Merkel Signs, Storefronts and Overhead Wires

A boom lift puts a worker and tools at height on a boom that can extend up and over obstacles, which on a Merkel job means a sign, a storefront, a gin's upper works or a roofline. Wires are the main hazard. OSHA's aerial lift fact sheet says to "Treat all overhead power lines and communication cables as energized, and stay at least 10 feet (3 meters) away," and Texas Health and Safety Code chapter 752 draws a six-foot limit around any high-voltage wire that holds until a shutoff, a relocation or a barrier is agreed with whoever operates it. The fact sheet also says to "Use a body harness or a restraining belt with a lanyard attached to the boom or bucket." In March 2025 alone, an NWS San Angelo summary shows Abilene with 10 days of peak gusts at 40 mph or higher. Articulating against telescopic is on the boom lift page.

Scissor Lifts for Merkel Classrooms, Shops and Slab Floors

A scissor lift carries a guarded platform vertically, which suits ceilings, lights and ductwork inside a Merkel building with a firm, level floor. Merkel ISD lists three campuses, and the proposed middle school would add interior work if it is built; shops and the existing buildings the City markets bring the rest. OSHA's August 1, 2000 letter says scissor lifts "do meet the definition of a scaffold," so the fall protection is the guardrail system rather than a lanyard tie-off. Outdoors, OSHA's scaffolding eTool says units rated for outdoor use are "generally limited to wind speeds below 28 miles per hour." The scissor lift page weighs slab units against rough-terrain ones.

Forklifts for Merkel Docks, Yards and Storage Buildings

A forklift unloads trucks and stacks pallets for Merkel's farm trade, shops and job sites, and the choice is cushion tires for a smooth warehouse floor or pneumatic tires for gravel and dirt. The rough-terrain kind is what OSHA's eTool calls Class VII, forklifts "typically intended for use on unimproved natural terrain." OSHA's forklift rule, 29 CFR 1910.178(l), wants each driver trained and evaluated before a first shift on the machine, and construction sites follow it through section 1926.602(d). Capacities and mast heights are on the forklift rental page.

Backhoes and Loaders for Merkel Culverts, Lines and Stockpiles

A backhoe loader digs the trench, sets the pipe and backfills with one machine, which suits Merkel's water and sewer taps and the driveways rural sites need. Outside the city, a new driveway onto a Taylor County road needs the County's driveway permit. Its application lists a "Permit fee $25.00," waived "If the culvert installation is completed by Taylor County," culvert pipe of at least 16 inch gauge steel, a culvert length of 30 to 60 feet, inspection by the County Commissioner or a designee, and a six-month window to build before the permit is void. A wheel loader handles stockpiles and loading out. OSHA's rollover subpart, section 1926.1000, covers rubber-tired front-end loaders in construction, and OSHA's section 1926.602 calls for seat belts on these machines. Bucket sizes and the backhoe range are on the backhoe and loader page.

Dozers for Merkel Site Pads, Lease Roads and Raw Land

A dozer cuts, pushes and spreads earth, and around Merkel it builds pads and access roads on the raw land the City markets, levels farm ground and cuts lease roads. The Handbook describes Taylor County as "prairie covered by grasses," and the clayey subsoils under that grass are what the blade moves. Any blade or ripper that disturbs soil 16 inches or deeper counts as excavation under Texas Utilities Code section 251.002, which puts the 811 call ahead of grading where lines may run. OSHA's rollover subpart, section 1926.1000, covers crawler tractors used in construction. The dozer rental page lists blade sizes, weights and published prices.

Permits, Streets and Power Lines for Merkel Lifts

The City of Merkel's rules for crane and equipment work sit in two chapters of its code on eCode360, current through an ordinance adopted May 12, 2026. Merkel's building chapter adopts the 2021 International Building Code and the 2020 National Electrical Code, requires a permit "prior to initiating new builds or extensions of buildings," and adds "No other permits are required." Under section 4.02.008(1), the property owner must "arrange for an independent contractor to perform any required inspection." The City's Forms page sends permit questions to City Hall and offers an online building permit application.

Outside the city limits, Taylor County's Road and Bridge office handles driveway permits on county roads, and the Air Force's 2015 Dyess AICUZ study says "Taylor County (including the Caps community) currently has no zoning authority". The FAA's notice rule reaches every site: 14 CFR 77.9(a) covers "Any construction or alteration that is more than 200 ft. AGL at its site." We found no public-use airport in Merkel in the sources we read. Our Abilene permit, airspace and power line guide sets out the state rules in full.

  • Heavy vehicles: three or more axles and over 12,000 pounds gross rating stay on IH 20, its access roads, the named FM routes, North 1st and other state roads, except documented deliveries (sections 11.03.001 and 11.03.002).
  • Enforcement: a violation is a Class C misdemeanor (section 11.03.003), and engine braking is prohibited (section 11.01.001).
  • Overhead lines: notice to the line operator at least 48 hours before work inside chapter 752's six-foot distance (Texas Health and Safety Code section 752.003).
  • Digging: an 811 locate request two business days ahead, weekends and holidays excluded, and a new notice if the start slips past fourteen days (Texas811).
Questions

Merkel FAQs

Do you bring cranes to Merkel from Abilene?

Yes. We quote cranes and equipment for Merkel, which the Handbook of Texas places seventeen miles west of Abilene off Interstate 20. Travel and delivery appear as their own lines on the written quote, with any permits, escorts and mats. Inside Merkel, the route follows the City's heavy-vehicle code, which holds vehicles of three or more axles rated over 12,000 pounds to Interstate 20, its access roads and the state routes, so the set-up address and its street are the first things we ask about.

Can a crane truck park on a street in Merkel?

Only on some streets, and not in residential areas. Section 11.03.001 bars vehicles with three or more axles rated over 12,000 pounds from "parking, use of and travel on streets within the city limits." The state routes in section 11.03.002, such as FM 126 (Kent and Ash Streets), FM 1235 and North 1st, are open to them, but "Parking on these streets in residential areas by any vehicle included in section 11.03.001 is prohibited." Anywhere else, ask City Hall first.

Do I need a City of Merkel permit to use a crane?

The City's code ties its building permit to building work, not to cranes. Section 4.02.008(2) requires a permit "prior to initiating new builds or extensions of buildings" and says "No other permits are required." If the crane sets steel or trusses for a new building or an extension, that project needs its permit. The crane's route and set-up still answer to the heavy-vehicle chapter.

Can you supply a crane for wind turbine work in Taylor County?

We quote all-terrain and crawler cranes of the sizes turbine work calls for, with no claim to any wind site. NextEra places Horse Hollow in Taylor and Nolan counties, and AES says its Buffalo Gap repower, in the same two counties, is replacing 282 older turbines with 117 newer models, with operation planned for 2027. Lifts on a private wind site are planned with its owner; for a quote we need the component weights, the hub height and radius, the crane pad and the access road.
