Dozer Rental in Abilene, TX
A dozer is a crawler tractor that pushes, cuts and spreads earth with a blade on the front, and in Abilene the right one is set by how much dirt moves, how soft the clay is and what the truck can haul. John Deere lists its 450 P-Tier at 17,816 lb with a 2.1 cu yd straight blade 8 ft 1 in wide; Cat lists its D6's push-arm version at 48,788 lb with a 7.5 yd3 semi-universal blade and its D8 at 87,083 lb with 13.47 yd3. Low-ground-pressure (LGP) versions spread the weight: Deere's 650 P-Tier drops from 6.4 psi to 4.3 psi in LGP form. OSHA's rollover subpart covers crawler tractors, and Texas law requires an 811 notice before a blade or ripper disturbs soil 16 inches down. We quote the machine, the haul and every charge in writing.
Small dozer: $500-$800 per day, national (rental marketplace guide, March 2026, one source) · full pricing guide
Crawler blade machines come in three working sizes. The small class, Deere's 450 P-Tier at 71 hp and its 650 P-Tier at 104 hp with a 2.9 cu yd blade 8 ft 9 in wide, cuts and fills house pads, driveways and finish grade. The medium class, Cat's D5 at 170 hp and D6 at 215 hp, pushes the volume on commercial pads and roads. At the heavy end, Cat's D8 at 363 hp with a 165.6 gal fuel tank moves mass earth and, with a ripper, breaks hard ground. The City of Abilene's technical specifications carry an "Item 156 Bulldozer Work" next to "Item 110 Excavation", and the region's largest builders describe the same kind of work: Crusoe said on March 27, 2026 that "Land clearing and site preparation for the new campus are already underway" on its 900 MW site beside the Stargate campus.
Prices for these machines rest on one published source, a national rental marketplace's March 2026 guide, so read them as a rough national guide and not as an Abilene rate or ours. Its national average is "$1,011/day, $2,828/week, or $7,571/month." By weight class, 15,000-20,000 lbs machines of 80-130 HP run $500-$800 for one day and $3,500-$6,000 over a month; 20,000-40,000 lbs machines run $800-$1,500 for a day and $6,000-$11,000 for a month; and 40,000-80,000 lbs machines start at $1,500 a day and reach $11,000-$25,000+ a month. A ripper adds "$100-$300/day", an operator "($300-$500/day)", and "Fuel is not included in the rental rate." We found no second survey to check these against. A Royse City row in the guide, east of Dallas and not local, averages $1,529 daily across 36 data points. Our rate comparison sets them beside the other machines.
Four rules frame the job. OSHA's rollover subpart, 29 CFR 1926.1000, names "crawler tractors" among the machines it covers and sets a protective-structure standard, section 1926.1001(c), for those "manufactured on or after July 15, 2019." The earthmoving section, 29 CFR 1926.602, lists bulldozers among its machines, wants belts in their seats, and wants a reverse alarm or a signaler wherever the view to the rear is blocked. Texas Utilities Code section 251.002(5) makes it excavation to "remove or otherwise disturb soil to a depth of 16 or more inches" with mechanized equipment, so a cut or ripper pass that deep waits for the 811 marks. And the City of Abilene's fee schedule lists a "Grading Permit Fee" of $350, with no effective date shown; ask the City's Building Inspections office whether your lot needs one.
Abilene's ground is the case for low-ground-pressure tracks. Taylor County's clayey subsoils "often include lime accumulations," in the Handbook of Texas's words, and Hollister clay, which the USDA describes alongside the Abilene series, opens cracks "more than 76 cm (30 in) deep" in dry spells. On that ground the printed figures matter: Cat lists 6.9 psi for the D5 with its VPAT blade, which angles and tilts, and 4.7 psi in LGP form, and Deere lists 6.4 psi and 4.5 psi for the 450 P-Tier. Heat matters too: NWS San Angelo put Abilene's count of 100-degree days at 76 in 2022 and 66 in 2023. And the haul sets the size. The marketplace guide says a medium machine needs a lowboy, and Deere's 650 P-Tier blade, at 8 ft 9 in, is wider than the 8 feet 6 inches TxDMV allows without a permit, so moving the bigger classes is heavy haul work.
To quote, we need the address, the acreage or pad size, what covers the ground now (grass, mesquite, old fill or rock), how deep the cuts run, whether you need a ripper, how a lowboy gets in, who will operate and for how long. The written quote names the machine and its blade, the rental period, the haul in and out, fuel, any damage waiver and every tax line. Under the Comptroller's Rule 3.294, receipts from a machine leased "without an operator are taxable," one charge for the machine with its operator is presumed a service, and damage waivers and the lessor's transportation charges are taxed, at 8.25 percent inside the City of Abilene.

Crawler Specs by Model: Blade, Weight, Power, Pressure
These are Deere's and Cat's published figures for five example crawlers, from the 71 hp 450 P-Tier to the 363 hp D8. Compare blade capacity with the volume you need to move, and weight and width with your trailer and your ground.
| Example model | Operating weight | Blade capacity | Blade width | Net power | Ground pressure |
|---|---|---|---|---|---|
| John Deere 450 P-Tier | 17,816 lb (base) | 2.1 cu yd straight blade | 8 ft 1 in | 71 hp | 6.4 psi; LGP 4.5 psi |
| John Deere 650 P-Tier | 21,165 lb (XLT base) | 2.9 cu yd XLT straight blade | 8 ft 9 in | 104 hp | 6.4 psi; LGP 4.3 psi |
| Cat D5 | 37,875 lb (VPAT) | 4.6 yd3 VPAT; 5.6 yd3 push-arm SU | not listed | 170 hp | 6.9 psi; LGP 4.7 psi |
| Cat D6 | 50,733 lb main spec; 48,788 lb push arm | 5.4 yd3 VPAT; 7.5 yd3 SU | not listed (24 in shoes) | 215 hp | 7.9 psi push arm; LGP 5 psi |
| Cat D8 | 87,083 lb (standard SU) | 13.47 yd3 SU | not listed | 363 hp | 13 psi; LGP 7.9 psi |
Each figure is the maker's published value for the blade or track setup named, from Deere's spec sheets and Cat's model pages. None of the five is a machine we own; each stands for its class, and blade output on your site depends on the material, its moisture and the operator.
Signs Your Abilene Site Needs a Crawler and Blade
These conditions favor a crawler with a blade over a compact loader, a digging-arm loader or a box blade behind a ranch tractor, and most of them also point to a size class. Read them against the acreage, the cover on the ground and the truck route in.
- A building pad, road or parking lot to cut and fill where the dirt has to move farther than a loader can carry it in its bucket.
- Brush and mesquite to clear before grading, the cover the Handbook of Texas gives for Jones County and for Shackelford County's savanna.
- Hard or rocky ground, like Shackelford County's Permian limestone under thin topsoil, where the March 2026 marketplace guide adds $100-$300 a day for a ripper.
- Clay that stays soft after rain, where the LGP versions of Deere's 450 and 650 and Cat's D5 print 4.3 to 4.7 psi.
- A cut of 16 inches or more where a pipeline, water main or power cable may be buried, which needs an 811 notice two business days ahead.
- A machine too wide or heavy for a standard trailer, where the guide says the medium class already needs a lowboy.
Reading Blade, Weight and Pressure Figures Model by Model
A blade's capacity is the volume it carries in a pass, and each maker prints it with the blade type, so compare like with like. Deere rates the 450 P-Tier's standard straight blade at 1.6 m3 (2.1 cu. yd.) under SAE and lists 2.0 m3 (2.6 cu. yd.) for the LGP, and the 650 P-Tier's XLT (extra-long track) straight blade at 2.2 m3 (2.9 cu. yd.). Cat rates the D5 at 4.6 yd3 with its VPAT blade and 5.6 yd3 with the push-arm semi-universal blade, and the D6 at 5.4 yd3 VPAT and 7.5 yd3 SU.
Weight moves with the blade: the D5 lists 37,875 lb with VPAT, 42,263 lb in LGP VPAT form and 38,228 lb with the push arm. Ground pressure is weight over track area, so wider shoes lower it. The D6's standard shoe is 24 in and its LGP options 30 in and 36 in, and the 36-in LGP VPAT version prints 5 psi against 7.9 psi on the push arm; the D8 prints 13 psi standard and 7.9 psi LGP. Fuel tanks hint at the day's burn: 83.2 gal on the D5, 90 gal on the D6 and 165.6 gal on the D8, with fuel billed apart from the rent in the marketplace guide. Travel is slow, which is why crawlers ride a trailer between sites: Deere lists 5.0 mph for both small machines, with an optional 6.0 mph on the 650.
Pads and Clearing on the Big Campuses, as Their Owners Describe Them
The largest earthwork around Abilene sits on campuses whose owners publish their scale. Oracle says the Stargate campus "consists of eight buildings on 1,100 acres, encompassing 4 million square feet of building space" (its Abilene page, current as of January 2026). On the adjacent campus for Microsoft, Crusoe's March 27, 2026 announcement says "Land clearing and site preparation for the new campus are already underway," with the first building "expected to be energized in mid-2027." Vantage's 1,200-acre Frontier campus in Shackelford County "will host 10 single-story data centers," according to a Data Center Dynamics report of December 15, 2025. At Dyess, the SBA's notice for the B-21 Mission Planning Facility (closing date 5/5/2026) lists "tree clearing & grubbing, earthwork & hauling" for an "approximately 47,000 SF single story" building.
Data Center Dynamics placed IREN's 1,700-acre Sweetwater 1 site "outside Sweetwater in Fisher County" on May 6, 2026, and our Sweetwater page covers the town's plants and campuses. ENGIE describes its operating Anson Solar project as "Over 2,200 acres of land under long-term lease, including all planned solar panels, collection lines, and access roads." These are their projects, not ours, and nothing here says who does their site work. The Stargate and construction data page lists each figure with its source and date.
Rollover Protection, Seat Belts and 811 on a Grading Job
OSHA's earthmoving rules read plainly. 29 CFR 1926.1000(a) covers "crawler tractors," "rubber-tired dozers" and the other listed machinery "used in construction work." Under paragraph (c), machinery "manufactured on or after July 15, 2019" needs a rollover structure built to "the minimum performance standards" of section 1926.1001(c). Paragraph (e) wants a label on every structure listing the "Manufacturer or fabricator's name and address;" and the "Machine make, model, or series number that the structure is designed to fit." Look for that plate when the machine comes off the trailer.
The seat belt rule, paragraph (a)(2)(i) of 29 CFR 1926.602, reaches the equipment that section lists and points to "Society of Automotive Engineers, J386-1969," and paragraph (a)(9)(ii) bars backing a machine with "an obstructed view to the rear" unless "a reverse signal alarm" works or "an employee signals that it is safe to do so." Grading carries a state rule as well. Texas Utilities Code section 251.151 requires the 811 notice by "the 48th hour" before the work and no sooner than "the 14th day," and if a blade does strike a line, section 251.159(d) says the excavator "shall delay backfilling in the immediate area of the damage until the damage is reported" and a repair schedule is agreed. OSHA's rollover subpart lists every covered machine.
Small, Medium or Large Crawler: Matching Blade to Job
Blade size and power set the day's output; weight and width set the haul and the ground pressure. The classes below use Deere's and Cat's published figures and the one national price survey we found, so treat the prices as a guide and the written quote as the number.
Small crawler, Deere 450 or 650
Deere's 450 P-Tier weighs 17,816 lb with a 2.1 cu yd blade 8 ft 1 in wide, and its 650 P-Tier weighs 21,165 lb with 2.9 cu yd and 8 ft 9 in. Both travel at 5.0 mph and come in LGP form. They suit house pads, driveways, finish grading and light clearing. The 450 fits the guide's 15,000-20,000 lbs class, which ships for "$300-$600 roundtrip" on a standard equipment trailer.
Medium crawler, Cat D5 or D6
Cat's D5 weighs 37,875 lb with its 4.6 yd3 VPAT blade and makes 170 hp; the D6's push-arm version weighs 48,788 lb and carries 7.5 yd3 on its semi-universal blade, with LGP shoes of 30 in and 36 in against the standard 24 in. These suit commercial pads, roads and heavier clearing. The guide prices delivery by weight: "$500-$1,200 roundtrip" with a lowboy for 20,000-40,000 lbs, more above that.
Heaviest example, Cat D8
Cat's D8 weighs 87,083 lb, makes 363 hp and pushes 13.47 yd3 on its semi-universal blade, at 13 psi standard or 7.9 psi in LGP form. It suits mass earthwork and ripping on large sites. It outweighs the top of the guide's 40,000-80,000 lbs class, which already calls for a lowboy and oversize load permits.
Operated instead of bare
The guide puts a hired operator at "($300-$500/day)". Under the Comptroller's Rule 3.294, a machine furnished "with an operator for which a single charge is made" is presumed a service and not taxed, unless the work is itself a taxable service, while a deal that "is charged separately for tangible personal property and operator" is presumed a lease. It suits owners who want the pad, not the seat time.
Dozer Rental FAQs
What does a dozer rental cost in Abilene?
The only published survey we found is national: a rental marketplace's March 2026 guide averages "$1,011/day, $2,828/week, or $7,571/month," with small 15,000-20,000 lbs machines from $500 a day and large 40,000-80,000 lbs machines from $1,500. No second source checks those figures, so treat them as a guide. Delivery is extra, from "$300-$600 roundtrip" for a small machine, and a bare rental is taxable in Texas, 8.25 percent combined inside Abilene per the Comptroller. Our written quote sets the real number for your machine and dates.
What size dozer do I need for a house pad or land clearing?
Match the blade to the volume and the ground. Deere's 450 and 650 P-Tier, at 17,816 lb and 21,165 lb with 2.1 and 2.9 cu yd blades, suit house pads, driveways and light clearing; Cat's D5 and D6, at 4.6 to 7.5 yd3, suit commercial pads and heavier clearing; and the D8's 13.47 yd3 blade is for mass earthwork. On soft clay, ask for an LGP version. If the job is a trench or a basement, excavator rental is the better fit, because a blade pushes rather than digs.
Does grading land with a crawler need an 811 call first?
If the blade or ripper will disturb soil 16 inches down, yes. Texas Utilities Code section 251.002(5) counts any use of "mechanized equipment of any kind" that disturbs soil to that depth as excavation, and the notice must reach the one-call center at least two business days before the blade drops. Locates are free, and a locate ticket goes stale once the start slips "beyond fourteen days of the original notice." Section 251.156(a)(4) exempts agricultural work on private property, but grading for a building is a different job.
How is a D6 or D8 delivered?
On a lowboy trailer, and the heaviest class needs permits. A national rental marketplace's March 2026 guide prices medium-class delivery at "$500-$1,200 roundtrip" with a lowboy required and large-class delivery at "$1,000-$2,000+ roundtrip" with a lowboy and oversize load permits. Texas lets a load travel without a permit up to 8 feet 6 inches in width and 14 feet in height, at 80,000 pounds gross, per TxDMV, and Cat's D8 by itself weighs 87,083 lb. The written quote shows the haul in and out as its own line, with any permit.
