Carry Deck Crane Rental in Abilene, TX

A carry deck crane is a compact wheeled industrial crane that lifts from its outriggers, drives with a load on its hook, or carries material on its flat deck, and in Abilene the choice turns on which of those a job needs, the doors and aisles the machine must pass, and the floor or yard beneath it. Pick-and-carry, driving while the load hangs, earns a lower rating than a lift on outriggers: Broderson prints 30,000 lbs on outriggers for its IC-200 but up to 17,000 lbs pick and carry. OSHA's construction crane standard lists "industrial cranes (such as carry-deck cranes)" in section 1926.1400. Below are five example machines, dated prices, the rules, and the details we ask for before a written quote, which is free.

Published price

$200 to $500 per hour for a small crane, national (equipment-rental marketplace guide, April 27, 2026) · full pricing guide

The class runs from compact to heavy. Broderson rates its IC-35 at 8,000 lbs on a body 5' wide, its IC-200 at 30,000 lbs on outriggers with a 73' 8'' sheave height on the boom extension, and its IC-400 at 50,000 lbs. Manitex's Valla V90R is a battery-electric pick-and-carry crane, and Jekko's SPX1280 is a mini crawler that spreads its outriggers to a footprint of up to 4.6 x 4.6 m. Machines like these handle plant maintenance, set motors, tanks and machinery, move pipe and steel around fabrication yards, and lift inside warehouses and hangars where no truck-mounted crane can park beside the load. Sweetwater's gypsum wallboard plants are one such setting, and the Sweetwater crane rental page covers what is made there.

The national price guides we found give no rate for this class by name. The pricing guide a national equipment-rental marketplace put out on April 27, 2026 calls small carry decks generally cheaper than tower cranes and puts small cranes between $200 and $500 an hour on average; its small-crane rows show $150 to $350/hour for the machine alone, $200 to $450/hour with an operator and $300 to $600/day crane only. Hourly rentals there "require a daily minimum number of hours", three to eight. Under the Comptroller's Rule 3.294, "Receipts from the lease of tangible personal property without an operator are taxable", as are damage waivers and delivery, while a single crane-and-operator charge counts as a presumed service, untaxed unless the job is a taxable service, and split charges tax the machine line. Abilene's combined rate is 8.25 percent; the cost page for cranes and equipment lists every class.

OSHA's scope covers carry decks by name when the work is construction, and the small-equipment section, 1926.1441, reaches only machines with a rated capacity of 2,000 pounds or less, far under every model here. So the full operator rule applies: 29 CFR 1926.1427(a) has the employer ensure each operator is "trained, certified/licensed, and evaluated". OSHA's operation section, 1926.1417, adds the pick-and-carry rules set out below, and 29 CFR 1926.1419(a)(2) requires a signal person "When the equipment is traveling, the view in the direction of travel is obstructed." Section 1926.1424 calls for "control lines, warning lines, railings or similar barriers" around the swing hazard area. Yard work near overhead lines brings in the 20-foot test of section 1926.1408 and the six-foot limit in Texas Health and Safety Code chapter 752.

Floors, yards and weather pick the machine here. Indoors the slab carries crane and load together, and Broderson's IC-400 weighs 52,300 lbs before it lifts anything; under section 1926.1402(c)(2) the controlling entity must tell the operator where documented hazards such as "voids, tanks, utilities" lie beneath the set-up. Outdoors, the Abilene soil series sits among shrink-swell clays the USDA describes, so a yard that cracked in August can go soft after a September storm. Yard work also meets Abilene's weather: the airport's normal count of 100-degree highs is 18.5 a year, and the largest annual peak gust in NOAA's 2010-2024 airport summaries is 74.0 mph, in 2023. Height counts near runways, even for a deck crane: the DCOA puts its Access Business Park "directly across the highway from Abilene Regional Airport", and 14 CFR 77.9(b)(1) sets a notice surface of "100 to 1 for a horizontal distance of 20,000 ft. from the nearest point of the nearest runway" at airports "with its longest runway more than 3,200 ft."

For a carry deck quote, tell us what each load weighs by its maker's figure, where it is picked and set, and the route it rides between them: door widths and heights, ramps, the floor or yard surface and anything overhead. Add whether the plant keeps running, the address and the days. We reply in writing with the machine, whether it comes with an operator, the billed minimum or rental term, delivery, rigging or mats, each charge and any tax line. A machine set that needs a written lift plan pairs the crane with rigging and lift planning; equipment leaving the building goes to heavy haul and machinery moving; and the guide to Abilene permits, airspace and power lines collects the City, FAA and utility rules.

Five Compact Cranes Compared: Hook, Carry, Reach and Footprint

One maker's published figures per row, picked to show the class from a 5' wide compact model to a 50,000 lbs plant machine and a metric mini crawler. The pick-and-carry column gives the figure each maker prints for pick and carry.

Example model Rated capacity Pick-and-carry figure Height and reach Width, weight, power
Broderson IC-35 8,000 lbs Up to 6,700 lbs 33' 4'' sheave; 27' 2'' reach 5' wide; 7,860 lbs; 0 to 10 mph travel
Broderson IC-200 30,000 lbs on outriggers Up to 17,000 lbs 73' 8'' sheave; 66' reach (extension) 31,080 lbs; 18 mph in fourth gear
Broderson IC-400 50,000 lbs 25,000 lbs 98' 6'' sheave; 88' reach 52,300 lbs; 154 HP; 70% gradeability
Manitex Valla V90R (electric) 15,400 lbs on wheels with winch 18,000 lbs with crossbar pick & carry hook 32 feet 2 inches up; 16 feet 6 inches out 16,335 lbs; lead-acid battery
Jekko SPX1280 (mini crawler) 8000 kg Up to 2000 kg 26.7 m tip height; 20 m radius 4.6 x 4.6 m footprint; 8600 kg

Figures are the makers' own maximums for each model, and none is a working capacity: the chart for the boom, radius and set-up on the day decides a lift, and a carried load is rated lower still. Broderson prints slightly different sheave heights elsewhere for the IC-200 and IC-400. Jekko prints metric only. The five stand in for the class; we make no claim to own them.

Signs a Plant or Building Lift Needs a Carry Deck

A carry deck fits where a truck-mounted crane cannot park and a forklift cannot hold a load on a hook. The conditions below, met on plant floors and yards around Abilene, point to one; the last one points past it to a longer reach.

  • The lift is inside a plant, hangar or warehouse, under a roof or between columns, where no truck can set outriggers beside the load.
  • A motor, pump or pipe spool must ride an aisle or yard on the hook, which 29 CFR 1926.1417(u) treats as traveling with a load.
  • The path runs through a door or aisle too tight for a truck, where a machine like Broderson's 5' wide IC-35 still passes.
  • Engine exhaust is unwelcome in the room, which points to a battery-electric machine such as Manitex's lead-acid Valla V90R.
  • The floor has documented pits, trenches or buried lines that the controlling entity must point out before set-up under OSHA section 1926.1402(c)(2).
  • The hook must reach past what a deck crane offers, beyond the 88' horizontal reach Broderson lists for its IC-400, which points to a boom truck or larger crane.

Three Ratings on One Crane: Outriggers, Pick-and-Carry and the Deck

A carry deck has more than one capacity, and the one that governs depends on how the load moves. Lifting from outriggers earns the headline figure; driving with the load on the hook earns a smaller one. Broderson's IC-200 spec sheet lists "CAPACITY ON OUTRIGGERS 30,000 lbs." against "PICK AND CARRY CAPACITY up to 17,000 lbs."; the IC-35 sheet pairs 8,000 lbs with up to 6,700 lbs, and the IC-400 sheet 50,000 lbs with 25,000 lbs. Manitex rates the Valla V90R at 15,400 lbs on wheels with its winch and 18,000 lbs with its crossbar pick & carry hook, and Jekko pairs the SPX1280's 8000 kg maximum load with up to 2000 kg pick and carry.

Every headline is a short-radius number: Manitowoc defines maximum capacity as the one "obtained at minimum radius with basic minimum boom length", so the chart at your real radius governs, and hook blocks and rigging "must be subtracted from the rated load". OSHA section 1926.1417(o)(1) adds: "The equipment must not be operated in excess of its rated capacity." The deck is the third case. No deck rating for these models appears in the figures quoted here, so a deck load is checked against that machine's manual first, as 29 CFR 1926.1417(a) has the employer follow "all manufacturer procedures applicable to the operational functions of equipment".

Driving With a Load: 29 CFR 1926.1417(u) Word for Word

Section 1926.1417 is where OSHA's construction crane standard sets the travel rules. 29 CFR 1926.1417(u) reads: "Traveling with a load is prohibited if the practice is prohibited by the manufacturer." Where the maker allows it, 29 CFR 1926.1417(u)(2)(i) requires that "A competent person supervises the operation, determines if it is necessary to reduce rated capacity," and decides on "load position, boom location, ground support, travel route," overhead obstructions and speed. 29 CFR 1926.1417(u)(2)(iii) adds: "For equipment with tires, tire pressure specified by the manufacturer is maintained." On a plant floor that means the route is walked before the lift, the slab along it is known, the boom rides where the competent person sets it, and the pace stays far below the 18 mph Broderson lists for the IC-200 in fourth gear.

A load hung ahead of the seat can block the view forward, which is when 29 CFR 1926.1419(a)(2) calls for a signal person. Size buys no exemption here: section 1926.1441 is titled "Equipment with a rated hoisting/lifting capacity of 2,000 pounds or less.", and the operator rule's size carve-out, 29 CFR 1926.1427(a)(2), applies only to that class. Broderson's smallest model on this page, the IC-35, is rated at 8,000 lbs, so its operator, like every one here, must be "trained, certified/licensed, and evaluated"; on a bare rental, we ask who that will be.

Abilene and Big Country Plants: What They Make, What a Small Crane Meets

Plants around Abilene give a small crane a wide spread of floors. The Development Corporation of Abilene's advanced manufacturing page names metal fabricators Rentech, Hirschfeld Steel and Broadwind Heavy Fabrications; food and beverage makers Coca-Cola, AbiMar Foods and Great Lakes Cheese; and Tige Boats, Bridgestone Bandag, Martin Sprocket and Gear, Cargill, PetroSmith, Primal Pet Foods and Eagle Aviation's "Maintenance Repair and Overhaul facility". The DCOA wrote on August 20, 2026 that Great Lakes Cheese, which it calls the largest packager of natural cheese in the United States, runs a facility of more than 275,000 square feet here; AbiMar Foods will invest $15 million in two of its three Abilene facilities (DCOA news, June 18, 2026); and Bavarian Polymers, maker of vinyl window and door extrusions, is adding 30,000 square feet in the Five Points Business Park (DCOA, August 25, 2025). In Sweetwater, on I-20, USG runs a sheetrock line that can run over 450' per minute, per Sweetwater Economic Development, and Georgia-Pacific says its Sweetwater Complex is more than 700,000 square feet (Oct.

5, 2023). Snyder has a $15 million plastics plant, the Texas A&M Transportation Institute reports; the Snyder crane rental page covers its other sites. Floors like these ask the same of any small crane: will it fit the door, will the slab hold it with the load, can it run on battery where exhaust is unwelcome, and who signals when the load hides the path?

Carry Deck, Electric Pick-and-Carry, Mini Crawler or Boom Truck

Four compact options cover most plant and building lifts around Abilene. The choice turns on what the load weighs, the path it travels, what the floor will carry, the air in the room, and how far the hook must reach.

Standard carry deck crane

The all-round pick for plant floors and yards with room to drive. The Broderson models here run from the IC-35, at 8,000 lbs and 0 to 10 mph, to the IC-400, at 50,000 lbs with a 154 HP Cummins engine, and every pick-and-carry rating sits below its outrigger figure. It suits machinery sets, pipe and steel moves and maintenance lifts where the load must hang from a hook.

Electric pick-and-carry crane

Manitex's Valla V90R page lists a lead-acid battery, 15,400 lbs on wheels with the winch, 32 feet 2 inches of vertical reach, 16 feet 6 inches of horizontal reach and 16,335 lbs of machine with standard counterweight. It suits closed rooms and clean floors where engine exhaust is a problem, and it trades reach for that.

Mini crawler crane

Jekko publishes the SPX1280 in metric only: 8000 kg maximum load, 26.7 m tip height, 20 m maximum radius, a 4.6 x 4.6 m maximum footprint and 8600 kg of machine, on diesel plus electric batteries. It suits tight interiors where the load is set from outriggers, since its pick-and-carry figure tops out at 2000 kg.

Boom truck outside

When the load sits outdoors beside a lot or street and needs height, a truck-mounted crane drives in on its own chassis and reaches far higher, with CDL and City street rules in play; the boom truck rental page compares five models and those rules.

Questions

Carry Deck Crane Rental FAQs

How much does a carry deck crane rental cost?

Use small-crane figures; the national guides price that category, not carry decks by name. The April 27, 2026 crane guide of a national equipment-rental marketplace lists $150 to $350/hour for a small crane rented bare and $200 to $450/hour with an operator, and hourly bookings carry a daily minimum that runs from three to eight hours. A bare rental, a damage waiver and delivery are taxed under Rule 3.294 at Abilene's 8.25 percent combined rate, and our free written quote lists each charge.

What is the difference between a carry deck crane and a forklift?

A carry deck hangs the load from a hook on a boom; a forklift carries it on forks. OSHA's crane standard lists carry-deck cranes among industrial cranes and leaves out forklifts "except when configured to hoist and lower (by means of a winch or hook)" and move a suspended load. The operator rules differ too: section 1926.1427 for the crane, and for the forklift 29 CFR 1910.178(l) training with an evaluation "at least once every three years" (see our forklift rental page).

Does a carry deck crane operator need certification?

For construction work, yes. OSHA's small-crane carve-out at 29 CFR 1926.1427(a)(2) covers only equipment with a "manufacturer-rated hoisting/lifting capacity of 2,000 pounds or less", and the smallest Broderson on this page is rated at 8,000 lbs, so section 1926.1427 applies in full. Rented with an operator, the crane comes with one who meets the rule; rented bare, it needs yours to, and we ask who that is before delivery.

Is pick-and-carry allowed with a carry deck crane?

Yes, if its maker allows it, and at a lower rating. 29 CFR 1926.1417(u) prohibits traveling with a load "if the practice is prohibited by the manufacturer"; where it is allowed, a competent person supervises, decides whether rated capacity must come down, and settles load position, boom location, route and speed, and the tires stay at the maker's pressure. Broderson's IC-200 is rated at 30,000 lbs on outriggers but up to 17,000 lbs pick and carry.

Will a carry deck crane fit inside a plant or building?

Often, if the doors, the floor and the overhead allow it. Broderson's IC-35 is 5' wide and weighs 7,860 lbs, and Manitex's Valla V90R runs on a lead-acid battery. 29 CFR 1926.1417(p) says "The boom or other parts of the equipment must not contact any obstruction", and section 1926.1402(c)(2) has the controlling entity point out documented voids, tanks and utilities under the set-up.
