Skid Steer and Track Loader Rental in Abilene, TX
A skid steer is a compact loader on fixed wheels that turns by driving one side faster than the other, a compact track loader (CTL) works the same way on rubber tracks, and in Abilene the pick between them usually comes down to wet clay. Cat lists its wheeled 262D3 at 8,296 lb with a rated operating capacity of 2,700 lb, and its tracked 299D3 at 11,464 lb, rated 3,480 lb at 35% of tipping load and printed at 4.7 psi of ground pressure on 17.7 in tracks. That pressure figure matters on local ground: the USDA gives the Abilene soil series "moderately slow" permeability, and June and May top NOAA's 1991-2020 rainfall normals for Abilene. On a construction job, OSHA's rollover subpart reaches "rubber-tired skid-steer equipment" if it was built after July 15, 2019. We quote the loader, each attachment and every charge in writing.
Skid steer, national day rate: $200 to $600 (Angi, July 9, 2026 update) · full pricing guide
Rated operating capacity, or ROC, is the load a maker rates the loader to carry, stated as a share of its tipping load, the weight in the bucket that would lift the rear of the machine. Makers state that share differently, so compare like with like. Cat's 299D3 specifications give 3,480 lb at 35% and 4,970 lb at 50%, Deere's 333 P-Tier gives 3,850 lb and 5,500 lb at the same two points, and CASE rates its wheeled SV280B at 2,800 lb at 50%. Takeuchi lists 2,975 lb for its TL12R-2 with no percentage shown. Attachments run off the auxiliary hydraulics: CASE lists 24.2 gpm standard and 37.6 gpm high-flow, Takeuchi 23 GPM or an optional 40 GPM. Ranch work is local work: the Handbook of Texas calls Baird in Callahan County "the center for local oilfield supplies and ranching."
Loader prices cited here are national, not Abilene rates and not ours. One national equipment-rental marketplace's skid-steer guide, published March 10, 2022 and last modified November 8, 2023, gives wheeled machines a daily range of $200-$450 and tracked ones $300-$500, rising to $1,200-$3,500 and $2,000-$4,000 across a month, and says pallet forks, augers and other attachments "generally cost extra and may need to be rented separately." A second marketplace's July 31, 2023 guide puts compact track loaders "between $250 and $700" a day. HomeGuide's January 16, 2026 regrading guide lists skid-steer rental at $200 - $550 per day and $750 - $1,300 per week, and Angi's July 9, 2026 update gives $200 to $600 per day. Our rental price comparison sets these beside the other machines.
Federal and state rules both reach a rented loader. OSHA's rollover subpart and its seat belt rule apply to loaders used in construction, as the next sections set out word for word. When pallet forks go on, OSHA's 1999 letter on the forklift standard decides whether that standard applies. Texas adds two more. An auger or bucket that disturbs soil 16 inches down is excavation under Utilities Code section 251.002(5), so the 811 notice comes first. And Health and Safety Code section 752.004(a)(2) bars bringing "any part of a tool, equipment, machine, or material within six feet of a high voltage overhead line," so before an arm comes that close, the line's operator must be told and the two sides must have "negotiated a satisfactory mutual arrangement" for clearance. Work in a City of Abilene street or alley also needs an Engineering Division permit.
Abilene's ground decides wheels against tracks. The USDA puts runoff on the Abilene series at "negligible on slopes less than 1 percent," so water is slow to leave a flat lot, and the associated Rowena clay shows a linear extensibility "greater than 6.0 cm" in its top 100 cm (40 in), which means it swells as it wets. Days with a half inch of rain or more average 16.4 a year in NOAA's 1991-2020 normals. Heat limits the day as well: the same normals put days of 90 degrees F or more at 102.4 a year. Delivery has its own rules in the towns: Merkel's code says vehicles "having three (3) or more axles and rated to be in excess of 12,000 pounds gross weight" "are prohibited from parking, use of and travel on streets within the city limits," with exceptions for state roads and documented deliveries, and Baird closes stretches of three streets to trucks over two tons.
Delivery, fuel and damage terms appear as separate lines. A national rental marketplace's March 2026 guides for other machine classes put a damage waiver at 10-15 percent of the rent, and Rule 3.294 taxes it: "Damage waiver fees are subject to tax." The same rule taxes a loader rented without an operator, and the lessor's delivery charges, at the 8.25 percent combined rate the Comptroller's table gives Abilene on either side of the Taylor-Jones county line. To quote, we need the address, the work (grading, loading, carrying, augering), the ground and how wet it is, the attachments, who will run the machine and for how long. The written quote shows the loader, each attachment, the period, delivery, fuel terms, the waiver and the tax line.

Compact Loader Specs by Model: Wheels and Tracks
These are the makers' published figures for five example loaders, two on wheels and three on tracks. Read rated operating capacity with its tipping-load percentage, and ground pressure with its track width, before comparing machines.
| Example model | Type | Rated operating capacity | Operating weight | Ground pressure | Net power |
|---|---|---|---|---|---|
| Cat 262D3 | Skid-steer loader, wheels | 2,700 lb; 3,055 lb with counterweight | 8,296 lb | not listed | 72.9 hp |
| CASE SV280B | Skid-steer loader, wheels | 2,800 lb at 50% of tipping load | not listed | not listed | 68 hp net |
| Cat 299D3 | Compact track loader | 3,480 lb at 35%; 4,970 lb at 50% | 11,464 lb | 4.7 psi (17.7 in track) | 95 hp |
| John Deere 333 P-Tier | Compact track loader | 3,850 lb at 35%; 5,500 lb at 50% | 12,183 lb | 4.8 psi (450-mm track) | 105.8 hp |
| Takeuchi TL12R-2 | Compact track loader | 2,975 lb (no percentage shown) | 12,300 lb | not listed | 111.3 HP |
Figures are each manufacturer's published values from its own model page or spec sheet, with the tipping-load percentage where the maker states one. The models are examples of each type, not machines we own; working capacity depends on the bucket or attachment fitted.
When a Compact Loader on Wheels or Tracks Fits the Job
Each condition below favors a compact loader over an excavator, a backhoe or a crew with wheelbarrows, and most of them also settle wheels against tracks. Check them against your ground as it stands after the last rain, not as it looks in a dry spell.
- Red clay that stays soft for days after a storm, where Cat's and Deere's track loaders print 4.7 and 4.8 psi and the wheeled models print no figure.
- Fence posts or footings drilled with an auger 16 inches or deeper, which Texas law counts as excavation that needs an 811 notice first.
- Pallets of block, feed, sod or fencing to move across a yard, where pallet forks turn the loader into a carrier and raise OSHA's forklift question.
- Paved yards, slabs and packed base, where Cat's wheeled 262D3 travels up to 11 mile/h on its two-speed option and its tracked 299D3 8.4 mile/h.
- A powered attachment that needs high flow, which CASE rates at 37.6 gpm on the SV280B and Takeuchi at 40 GPM on the TL12R-2.
- A load near the loader's rating, where you need to know whether the maker stated it at 35 or 50 percent of tipping load.
Ground Pressure, Rated Capacity and Abilene's Wet Clay
Ground pressure is the machine's weight spread over the area its tracks touch, stated in psi, and on Abilene clay it decides whether a loader keeps working after rain. Cat prints 4.7 psi for the 299D3 on its 450 mm (17.7 in) track and 5.3 psi on the 400 mm (15.7 in) track, so the wider track spreads the machine's weight over more ground. Deere prints 4.8 psi for the 333 P-Tier. For scale, Deere's 450 P-Tier dozer prints 6.4 psi. The clay underneath explains the care. The USDA's Hollister series, a shrink-swell clay found with the Abilene soils, lists "Depth to slickensides: 20 to 50 cm (8 to 20 in)", the polished faces clay forms as it swells and shrinks.
Rain comes in bursts: on September 2-3, 2024, NWS San Angelo logged "numerous reports of flooded roadways and closed roads, including in San Angelo and Abilene," and its rainfall table records 8.30 for July 2015 alone, measured in inches. Rated operating capacity needs the same care with numbers. Cat's 299D3 has a tipping load of 9,945 lb and Deere's 333 P-Tier 11,000 lb, and each maker's 35 percent rating is the lower of its two figures. Cat gives the wheeled 262D3 a 5,400 lb tipping load and a 2,700 lb rating, rising to 3,055 lb with its counterweight. On soft or sloped ground, plan loads by the lower figure.
OSHA's Rollover, Seat Belt and Forklift Rules for Loaders
OSHA's rules on a rented loader are short, and most of them sit in two sections. The rollover subpart, 29 CFR 1926.1000(a), covers "All rubber-tired, self-propelled scrapers, rubber-tired front-end loaders, rubber-tired dozers," tractors, "crawler tractors, crawler-type loaders, and motor graders," and "also applies to compactors and rubber-tired skid-steer equipment, with or without attachments," "manufactured after July 15, 2019, that are used in construction work." Paragraph (c) requires the listed machinery "manufactured on or after July 15, 2019" to carry rollover protective structures that meet section 1926.1001(c), and paragraph (e) requires each structure to carry a label with the "Manufacturer or fabricator's name and address;" the "ROPS model number, if any;" and the "Machine make, model, or series number that the structure is designed to fit." Check that label at delivery. Seat belts come from 29 CFR 1926.602(a)(2)(i): "Seat belts shall be provided on all equipment covered by this section," built to SAE J386-1969.
Under paragraph (a)(9)(ii), a machine with an obstructed rear view may not back up unless its reverse signal alarm works or a worker signals. Forks are the last question. OSHA's October 21, 1999 letter says "Earthmoving equipment is not covered by 1910.178; skid-steer equipment may be covered," and that for trucks outside section 1926.602(d) "the requirements of section 1926.21 continue to apply." OSHA's rollover subpart gives the full scope.
Fence Lines, Augers and Ranch Ground Around Abilene
An auger on a loader is an excavating tool under Texas law, and fence work on ranch ground is where that rule gets tested. Utilities Code section 251.002(5) lists "auguring" first among the acts that count when mechanized equipment disturbs soil "to a depth of 16 or more inches," and Texas811's FAQ gives a one-word "Yes." to people who are not digging very deep. The request goes in two business days before the auger turns, not counting weekends or holidays. Paint or flags along the planned line help: Texas811 says white lining is not required, "but it is helpful to the locators." One exemption matters on a ranch. Section 251.156(a)(4) exempts "activities performed on private property in connection with agricultural operations"; if your job is not plainly inside it, make the call.
The land itself sets the tools. The Handbook of Texas says Shackelford County, "Originally open prairie," "now consists predominantly of mesquite and chaparral savanna," lists Jones County's cover as "tall grasses and mesquite trees," and puts Shackelford's Permian limestone under "two to fourteen inches of loamy clay topsoil," so a post auger there can reach rock quickly. Where a fence runs under a high-voltage line, section 752.003(a) of the Health and Safety Code requires notice to the line's operator "at least 48 hours before the work begins" when work will come closer than the law allows. The Abilene permit and power line guide covers both laws.
Wheels or Tracks: Choosing a Compact Loader
Surface, ground and load make the choice. Wheels travel faster on hard ground; tracks spread the weight and the tracked examples carry more. Line up two rated operating capacities only when both makers use one tipping-load percentage, because the makers below state it at 35 percent, 50 percent or not at all.
Wheeled loader, 262D3 or SV280B
Cat's 262D3 weighs 8,296 lb, is rated 2,700 lb, or 3,055 lb with the optional counterweight, and travels up to 11 mile/h; CASE rates its SV280B at 2,800 lb at 50% of tipping load. These suit paved yards, slabs, base and dry ground, and a national rental marketplace's guide, last modified November 8, 2023, prices wheeled rentals from $200 a day. Machines built after July 15, 2019 sit inside OSHA's rollover subpart.
Compact track loader, 299D3 or 333
Cat's 299D3 weighs 11,464 lb and is rated 3,480 lb at 35% of tipping load; Deere's 333 P-Tier weighs 12,183 lb on its standard 450-mm track at 4.8 psi; Takeuchi lists its TL12R-2 at 12,300 lb and 111.3 HP. Tracks suit wet clay, loose fill and lots that must be worked soon after rain, and they cost more: tracked rentals start at $300 a day in the same guide.
Forklift or excavator instead
For pallets lifted high onto racks or trucks on a hard floor, forklift rental gives you the machine built for it, with OSHA's training and evaluation rule in section 1910.178. For digging below grade, a compact excavator such as Deere's 35 P-Tier digs 10 ft 0 in. A loader still earns its keep carrying, grading and backfilling.
Skid Steer and Track Loader Rental FAQs
How much is a skid steer rental in Abilene?
No cost guide we read prints an Abilene rate, so use the national ranges. In one national equipment-rental marketplace's guide, last modified November 8, 2023, a day costs $200-$450 for a wheeled machine against $300-$500 for a tracked one, and a week $600-$1,000 against $700-$1,500. Angi's July 9, 2026 update says $200 to $600 a day. Attachments, delivery and a damage waiver are extra, and a loader rented without an operator is taxed at the 8.25 percent combined rate the Comptroller gives the City.
Is a track loader better than a skid steer in mud?
On soft clay, usually yes, and the makers' numbers show why. Cat prints 4.7 psi of ground pressure for its 299D3 track loader and Deere 4.8 psi for its 333 P-Tier, while the wheeled 262D3 and SV280B pages give no figure. Tracks are slower on pavement: Cat lists 8.4 mile/h for the 299D3 against 11 mile/h for the two-speed 262D3. They also cost more, starting at $300 a day against $200 for wheels in one national marketplace's November 2023 guide.
Does OSHA treat a skid steer with pallet forks as a forklift?
It depends on the work. OSHA's 1999 letter of interpretation says the forklift standard "does not apply to earthmoving equipment even if it has a fork lift attachment," and that "Skid-steer equipment that is earthmoving equipment is not covered by the standard." But "if it is not earthmoving equipment, it is covered," which brings the training and evaluation in section 1910.178(l), including an evaluation "at least once every three years." That rule also requires the employer to certify each operator's training and evaluation.
Do I need to call 811 to auger fence posts?
Yes, if the auger goes 16 inches or deeper and no exemption plainly covers you. Texas Utilities Code section 251.002(5) names "auguring" in its definition of excavation. The one-call center expects your locate request two business days ahead of the first post hole, and marking the lines is free. Section 251.156(a)(4) exempts "activities performed on private property in connection with agricultural operations," so a rancher's own fence may fall outside the notice rule, but a pipeline under the pasture is just as real.
